Providing content for your course can be the easy part in the process. Figuring out how to explain to students what impact that content will have on them and for them can be far more challenging. There are numerous ways to describe learning and just as many opinions as to which is best. Are learning targets even necessary? Come and hear what the E-Learning Office has to say about targets for learning. The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) is seeking proposals for its next phase of large research projects. The overarching goal of this next phase in OFI’s research is to build world-leading integrated and interdisciplinary understanding of the changing physical, biological and geochemical function of the North Atlantic Ocean and its Arctic gateways, identifying the impact these changes have on Atlantic Canada’s coastal communities.

OFI expects to fund two to five large projects — consortia representing academic, government, business, Indigenous and international researchers, Indigenous leaders and coastal community members. The funding total is $16 million, which means each research project should receive an average of approximately $1 million per year for four years (all projects are expected to be completed in 2023). To qualify, each consortia research project must be led by a principal investigator who is a faculty or staff member, or adjunct faculty, at UPEI, Dalhousie University or Memorial University of Newfoundland.

In recognition of the outstanding performance and dedication of our faculty and staff, a number of annual awards have been created to acknowledge their efforts and achievements. 

Up to 10 Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Faculty, Librarians, Clinical Veterinary Professionals and Clinical Nursing Instructors and four categories of Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Staff will be awarded in 2019. These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 10:30am-12:00pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. 

Susan Connolly, Associate Vice-President, Human Resources & Legal, will lead the process and chair the committee to select award recipients.

The topic for this week's Graduate Seminar in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is "Networking with Purpose", given by Dr. Amy Hsiao, FSDE Graduate Studies Coordinator based on a National Initiative on Capacity Building and Knowledge Creation in Engineering Leadership (NICKEL) workshop.

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB). The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Monday March 4 2019. They will be reviewed at the March meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after March 4 will be reviewed at the April 2019 meeting. 

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

UPEI  Multicultural Choir rehearsal scheduled for February 13 is cancelled due to weather. The next rehearsal will be  February  27, with pizza to follow, as an end-of-month social event.

Presentation Title: Designing Accessible Player Experiences

Abstract: Digital games provide opportunities for players to escape from reality, divert themselves from everyday concerns and connect with other players around the world. For players with disabilities, gaming provides all of these experiences and more. Gaming enables players with disabilities to participate in a shared culture with their peers on a level playing field, giving them all not only something to play but something to bond over. Unfortunately, the majority of accessible game design is reactive, relying on checklist approaches from previous generations of technology to drive the selection of accessibility features. This leads to inflexibility that often chafes against the creative process of game design, and leads to an implementation lag in new solutions for the evolving space of barriers encountered by players with disabilities in games. In this talk, Dr. Power will present his research programme aimed at changing this paradigm of accessible game design. He will argue that to break the implementation lag, we need new design thinking tools that allow game professionals to proactively create games that give players the opportunity to tune their own experiences.

During February, there will be three Triple P Positive Parenting seminars available for all dads and moms of children aged 2-12 who are looking to build better relationships with their children, raise confident children, and reduce stress. Triple P is an international parenting program that gives dads and moms the tools they need to feel confident in their skills as a parent. These seminars are open to anyone who cares for children aged 2-12– whether they be a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, or any other caregiver. At these 90-minute seminars caregivers can learn strategies to promote good behaviour, help build independence, and help their children strive for success. Seminars will take place at the Murphy’s Community Centre, 200 Richmond Street in Charlottetown. The presenter is Dr. Philip Smith, UPEI Dept. of Psychology.
