The Animal Welfare Journal Club meets approximately once a month to discuss scientific articles related to animal welfare; for eg in areas of animal welfare science, animal ethics, animal behaviour, anesthesia and analgesia; ethical veterinary practice. Everyone is welcome to attend and to propose articles for future discussion. 

The club is cohosted by AVC’s Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre and Animal Welfare Club. Email acrook@upei.ca or jdamico@upei.ca to be on the e-mail list for future information.

All are invited to register for the Atlantic ConnecTions Conference on Sustaining Women in SETT, to be held at UPEI on May 30 and 31. The ACT Conference is the regional conference for CCWESTT (Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Sciences, Trades, Technology) and is held every other year when CCWESTT is not held. Women and men in SETT professions, students, faculty, and staff are welcomed to this one-and-a-half day conference that includes a workshop on communication and panel discussions on hiring, retention, and diversity and inclusion in SETT workplaces. On Monday, April 8, 2019, the AVC Wildlife Service and the AVC Wildlife Club will hold their annual Wildlife Art Silent Auction and Raffle during National Wildlife Week from 9:30 am-4 pm. The fundraiser will be held on AVC's main floor near the cafeteria. The AVC Wildlife Service provides veterinary care for sick, injured, and displaced wildlife, with over 300 admissions each year. Every year, our talented students, faculty, and staff generously provide art and wildlife-related items for the fundraiser. There will be delicious wildlife-themed cupcakes during the day and a prize draw at 4 pm. Please come and check it out!

On Tuesday, April 16th at 9:45am, Dr. Jessica Strong will present her research talk entitled “Understanding the Intersection of Cognition, Health, and Aging Through Music”. The presentation will take place in MCDH328. 
On Wednesday, April 17th at 10:00am, Dr. Jessica Strong will present “The World Is Your Lab: Developing Research Excellence in Clinical PsyD Graduate Students”. The presentation will take place in MCDH328.

The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre reminds the campus community to wear green shirts on April 7 and 8 for Green Shirt Day, which aims to raise awareness about organ and tissue donations. Green Shirt Day falls on the anniversary of the Humboldt Bronco bus crash tragedy, where one of the victims, Logan Boulet, was an organ donor. Six people received organ/tissue because Logan signed a donor card. The Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, will be interviewing the third, and final, candidate for a newly-created, tenure-track faculty position in Zoo, Exotic & Wildlife Animal Medicine.

Each candidate has been asked to present two (2) thirty-minute seminars; one a topic of their choosing that should be geared toward 3rd year DVM students and aimed at delivering “core” information for veterinary students (i.e., information that a new graduate will need to possess to be successful on Day 1); and the other on their vision for building/expanding an exotic animal practice at the AVC.

Our third candidate will be on-campus Monday & Tuesday of next week.

Dr. Ariane Santamaria-Bouvier (U of Montréal ’07) has completed an internship in Zoological Medicine at the Université de Montréal (2008); an internship in Wildlife & Conservation Medicine at the Wildlife Center of Virginia (2010) and a residency in Zoological Medicine at the Université de Montréal (2014). She obtained a Certificate in Laboratory Animal Medicine from OVC in 2017 and is currently working as an Associate Veterinarian at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, MB.

Girls in grades 7 to 9 are invited to a science and engineering retreat on Friday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This 5th Girls Get WISE Science and Engineering Retreat will give girls a hands-on experience in chemistry, physics, biology, computer science, and engineering through fun workshops. Girls will also meet female role models who are working or studying in the science, engineering, and technology fields. These experiences will help girls make informed decisions about subject choices in their later school years.
