Call for judges - PEI Science Fair Wednesday, April 1, 2020

The PEI Science Fair is fast approaching and we need support from the science and engineering community on PEI for judging this important event.  Anyone with an interest in science can be a great judge to help make the experience fun and meaningful for the young people who have taken the time to explore project-based learning in science.

Please forward this call to anyone that you think may be interested in judging.  We are seeking to increase the number of judges this year to provide a better experience for the participants and the judges.

The Fair will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre at UPEI.  Judging takes place from 8:30 to Noon and a pizza lunch will be provided.  We need a small number of judges for a second round in the afternoon as well.

A typical judging experience is to arrive before 8:30 and find your team; judge several projects and then gather with your team to rank and score them; hand in your results before noon; finally, enjoy pizza and conversation with fellow science professionals and enthusiasts.

This years fair will have students from grades 4 to 12 participating.  Students in grades 7 to 12 have the opportunity to be sent to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Edmonton, Alberta. (Many of you will recall the 2012 Canada Wide Science Fair that we hosted here in Charlottetown).

If you are willing to judge, please contact Barry Linkletter at judge.peisf@gmail.com and more information will be provided.

The UPEI Music Department will perform Mozart’s famous opera “The Magic Flute” on March 6 and again on March 7, at 7:30 pm in the Steel Recital Hall.

This fully staged version will come to life under the musical direction of Sung Ha Shin-Bouey and stage direction of Stephen Bouey, both of whom are voice professors at UPEI. The opera will be sung in English and will have a unique take, offering perhaps a glimpse of university life in a fantastical way. It is a family-friendly show and is perfect for the inner child in everyone.

Tickets are $15 for adults and seniors, and $10 for students, and can be purchased online at https://bpt.me/4391069; at the Music Department Office (Room 203, Steel Building); or at the door. The storm date is March 8 at 7:30 pm.

For more information, contact Susan Stensch, UPEI Music Department, at music@upei.ca.

Based upon the popularity of our first Reading Group of 2020, we will build upon that reading with another chapter from The Equity Myth.

This time, please come to discuss the "Everyday World of Racialized and Indigenous Faculty Members in Canadian Universities" (Frances Henry and Audrey Kobayashi).

The library has a copy of the book, but we’ve also put a PDF of the chapter on a shared Google folder, at: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C-Kp3Rgic3p4Beu_26WK5h4i0ZD4LZmv?usp=sharing (accessible to anyone with a UPEI email address; we’ll be putting future readings in the same folder).

Take a look, grab a colleague, and come join the conversation on Wednesday March 4, at 3:00 pm, in Arts 409.

Everyone welcome!

Are you a member of UPEI’s LGBTQ2S+ community looking for a safe and fun space to discuss your experiences and connect with others? Then this group is for you!

On Friday March 6th, join UPEI’s LGBT+ Support Group as we connect for our first meeting. Headed by Joshua Peters and Allegra Netten, both Doctoral Psychology students and proud members of PEI’s LGBT2S+ community, this group will explore the unique mental health experiences of LGBT2S+ individuals. Topics may include anything from sex and sexuality, to finding support for specific LGBTQ2S+ issues, or tips for maintaining healthy relationships. Most importantly, this group will be a safe place to connect, learn, and support one another. For those who are new to the community or just want to listen – participation isn’t necessary. We hope to create a space for everyone, so confidentiality among participants will be strongly encouraged.

For our first gathering, we will be asking folks what they might want to include in our conversation as we move forward as well as outlining a few ideas we have for getting started. Light snacks will be provided.

Any questions or concerns? Don’t be afraid to reach out to either Allegra Netten (anetten@upei.ca) or Joshua Peters (jpeters5634@upei.ca), or find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LGBT-Support-Group-for-UPEI-students-and-staff-102290731361044/

We look forward to seeing you there!

Please join Ben Cudmore for his Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Seminar Program presentation entitled " The Role of Nanocellulose in a Sustainable Future".

Abstract: In the past century, petroleum products have been extensively developed resulting in cost-effective plastics with applications in food packing, transportation, and electronics. While these materials currently remain fundamental in supporting the needs of our constantly growing global society, they suffer from poor recyclability and long-life cycles. It is essential that our industrial and technological growth transitions towards more sustainable practices and materials. In the past decade, nanocellulose has shown potential to alleviate the need for petroleum-based products. Nanocellulose can be derived from natural cellulose, the most common natural polymer on the planet, making it a sustainable and renewable material. The two primary forms nanocellulose are nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) which are composed of highly ordered crystalline segments of cellulose (typically 100–500 nm by 10–50 nm), and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) consisting of segments of amorphous and crystalline cellulose (typically 2–60 nm by several micrometers). The nano-scale of these materials in addition to crystallinity provide excellent mechanical and optical properties that can be incorporated into composite materials. Nanocellulose is inexpensive, renewable and has been used to produce bioplastics, transparent conductive material, flexible electrodes, sensors, and generators with improved recyclability and competitive performance. This seminar explores the application of nanocellulose in these areas highlighting its potential role in maintaining our technologically advancing society.

All are welcome to attend!
