In July 2011, the family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize student writing achievement. The gift is to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor, and to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning. The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing is the largest such student-oriented program in Canada.

The Department of Music will be interviewing (by Zoom) four candidates for tenure-track positions in piano and brass.  These interviews and presentations/recitals will be available on zoom on the following days/times.

Two-factor or multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a service that adds additional layers of security to the standard password method of online identification. Without two-factor authentication, you would normally enter a username and password. With two-factor, you would be prompted to enter one additional authentication method such as a Personal Identification Number, another password, or even a fingerprint.

With multi-factor authentication, you would be prompted to enter more than two additional authentication methods after entering your username and password. October is Cyber Security month, keep hackers out of your accounts by using both your password and your phone.

Mark your calendar for this upcoming event.  Dr. Sheila Cote-Meek (co-editor of Decolonizing and Indigenizing Education in Canada and Vice-President Equity, People and Culture at York University) will be giving a book talk on October 15 at 2:00 pm.  This event will have a follow-up book club facilitated by Dr. Sherry Pictou (First female District Chief for the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq and Assistant Professor in the Faculties of Law and Management, Dalhousie University). These events are being hosted jointly between Mount Saint Vincent University, Saint Mary's University and Dalhousie University, and are open to all educators at AAU institutions.

For all students, faculty and staff who identify as partially or non-vaccinated for COVID-19, you are required to have a COVID-19 test at least weekly. UPEI will offer testing clinics on Fridays at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The tests are free and very quick/easy.  If you are unable to attend these clinics and require testing, please go to a Health PEI testing clinic and submit the test result via COVID19testing@upei.ca.   If you are tested at a Health PEI testing clinic, you can obtain your test result at the following link: https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/service/request-your-covid-19-test-result-report.

The Concussion Awareness Program invites you to participate in our survey to better understand how we can improve the care of concussed children and young adults on PEI. This study is being led by the Concussion Awareness Program (CAP) located here at UPEI.

The goal of the CAP is to increase public awareness related to concussion injury including the steps and protocols that facilitate recovery. The findings from this survey will help us refine our strategic plan.

The survey will take approximately 30 minutes with open-ended, ranking, and classifying questions. If interested, please contact cbeck8805@upei.ca or call 902-628-4300.

SHIFT Project PEI has an anonymous short survey that is open until October 4th. The survey can be accessed at this link or from the front page of the PEI Human Rights Commission website, on Facebook or Instagram (SHIFT Project PEI.) It is open to all Islanders aged 18 and up, whether or not they have experienced or witnessed workplace sexual harassment. There is a prize draw for a $150 gift card of your choice for all participants who want to enter. Data results will be released in the November, to give employers and employees a clearer picture of what is happening in PEI workplaces. The goal of SHIFT is to raise awareness and provide education in the prevention and resolution of incidents of workplace sexual harassment.

UPEI is one of the larger employers in the province, and we hope that employees and employers will contribute to the conversation.

About this event

Join ACENET and Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) in our Introductory R for Ecologists workshop series. Over three weeks, we will explore data analysis and visualization with R, based on the Data Carpentry Lessons. Each week will build off the last – if you miss a week, check out the previous link to follow along!

No previous coding experience necessary.

We will start with basic R syntax and the R Studio notebook interface. Then, we’ll teach you how to import CSV files, the structure of data frames, how to deal with factors, how to add/remove rows and columns, how to calculate summary statistics from a data frame, and a brief introduction to plotting. The last lesson demonstrates how to work with databases directly from R.

Be sure to come prepared and have the appropriate software and data files downloaded. You will need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages.
