Campus Notices

Since March 2020, UPEI, as a GSuite for Education customer, has been able to use the premium features normally available to the Enterprise G Suite for Education customers. Some of those premium features end beginning October 1, 2020, but Google Meet continues to be available to you and your students with these features:

  • Support for up to 100 users (was 250)
  • Recording sessions
  • Apps for Android & iOS
  • Presentations
  • External Participants
  • Secure Meetings

The features that will not be available, as of October 1, include live streaming and dial-in options. If you have requirements beyond Google Meet’s features, consider Blackboard Collaborate is an alternative.

For concerns or questions, please contact Donald Moses (dmoses@upei.ca). Should you need support learning about or using Blackboard Collaborate in your teaching, please contact the E-Learning Office (elearning@upei.ca).

The Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre invites the UPEI community to help us celebrate Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2020:

  • Wear an orange shirt to show the Indigenous community, and youth around the world, that EVERY CHILD MATTERS. Take a picture of you donning your orange shirt and share it with the Mawi’omi Facebook Page!

  • At 1:00 pm, join Elder Judy Clark for her weekly check-in session, “Taliaq?! What’s Up?!, online or in person (we can have up to five (5) students attend in-person due to COVID-19 restrictions). Come chat with Elder Judy, hear from fellow students, and connect with others.

  • At 2:00 pm, Elder Julie Pellissier-Lush will read some special pieces of her written work to help us be mindful and take note of what is important. Weather permitting, we will gather outside at the amphitheatre located adjacent to the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre to hear Julie’s readings. This session will be recorded and posted to the Mawi’omi Facebook page for those who cannot attend in person.

The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is providing three days of flu shot clinics for all students, faculty, staff and families. There is no charge for the flu vaccine. Children must be over the age of two (2). The clinics will be held as follows:

October 23, 2020:  9:00 am–3:30 pm

October 26, 2020:  1:00 pm–8:00 pm

There are no individual appointments; instead, we will provide the vaccine on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will follow the direction of the Chief Public Health Office and maintain physical distancing. If there are more than 50 people waiting you may need to wait outside or come another time. Please note the following.

  • Masks are mandatory in all UPEI buildings.
  • Read the fact sheets (used with permission from Public Health Nursing, Health PEI) before you come for your vaccine. They are located on the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre webpage: https://www.upei.ca/health-centre/flu-vaccines
  • You must be prepared to stay for 15 minutes following your vaccine.
  • Children less than 24 months old must be vaccinated by Public Health Nursing and you will need to make an appointment.
  • Children under nine (9) years old who have never had a flu vaccine will require a second vaccine in one month.
  • The FluMist (intra-nasal) vaccine will be available for those aged 2–17, as well as the Fluzone High-Dose vaccine will be available for individuals over 65 years of age.
  • If you have a fever or other symptoms of COVID-19, do not come to the flu shot clinics. Contact 8-1-1 for advice and direction.

Protect yourself and others.........Get the flu shot, not the flu!!

The cultural legacy of PEI’s Irish community will be in the spotlight on Sunday, October 4, when the UPEI Robertson Library and the Benevolent Irish Society of PEI (BIS) co-host a public launch of a digital collection of oral history interviews and lectures. The Benevolent Irish Society Oral History Interviews collection consists of recordings of oral history interviews conducted by student researchers in 1982 and 1983 with elderly Irish residents on PEI. More than 50 hours of audio recordings are now freely available online at https://islandvoices.ca/islandora/object/ivoices:bis-interviews, thanks to a collaboration between the BIS and the Robertson Library, with funding support from the Government of Ireland’s Emigrant Support Program.

The launch will be held at the BIS Irish Cultural Centre, 582 North River Road, Charlottetown, from 2–4 p.m. This event is free, but attendance is limited because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Advance registration is required. To register, contact Paula Kenny at 902-629-0340 or kenny_paula@hotmail.com, or submit a message at https://www.benevolentirishsocietyofpei.com/copy-of-home, using “RSVP October launch” in the subject line.

The theme for the 2020 Association of Atlantic Universities Teaching Showcase is “Build it and they will learn: The importance of community”. This theme is meant to encourage discussion of the many ways that we, as teachers and learners, are builders – including in an online environment.

As part of this theme, we are delighted to have engaged a skilled keynote speaker from outside the region who can discuss creating community within and outside the classroom and engaging all learners. To this end, we are pleased to note that Dr. Pamela Toulouse, 3MNTF, has agreed to be our keynote presenter for our virtual event in the morning.

The series of events begins with the Virtual Teaching Showcase which will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (ADT). This 3-hour event features a keynote presentation and a moderated discussion related to best teaching practices during the current pandemic. If you would like to attend the free Virtual Teaching Showcase, please register here.

Following the Teaching Showcase (and a lunch break), the SoTL workshop (from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. ADT) will be introduced through a three-person panel with the goal of answering the question of “why we should get excited and interested in SoTL?” If you would like to attend the free Virtual SoTL workshop, please register here.

For more information, please contact the regional grant recipients, Angie Kolen or Erin Austen.

*Please note: the granting agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) acknowledge that the widespread disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may hinder the ability of some institutions to provide applicants with official and up-to-date transcripts in advance of the deadline date, particularly at institutions which do not currently provide official electronic versions of these documents. Therefore, for the fall 2020 scholarships and fellowships competitions, the agencies will accept unofficial transcripts if official transcripts cannot be obtained.*

 Allocations:

UPEI has been provided with an allocation of CGS Master’s awards for the 2020 competition as follows:

CIHR: 1 award
NSERC: 3 awards
SSHRC: 3 awards

Submission and acceptance process:

1) Applicants will complete and submit an application using the Research Portal.

Application Deadline: December 1, 2020

Applicants can select up to three institutions where they intend to hold the award.

2) UPEI internal adjudication committee(s) will review applications submitted to UPEI to select candidates to receive the awards (December through March).

Results announced: beginning April 1, 2021

Applicants will have 21 days from the date of each offer of award to accept or decline. Please note the following:

  • A student may only accept one CGS M offer.  If an offer of award is accepted, the system will automatically set all other offers and Alternate statuses to Declined. The status of offers not accepted or declined within the 21 days will also automatically be set to Declined.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to regularly verify the Research Portal for results of the competition.
  • Awards must be held at the institution where the offer of award originates.
