This is a beginner level series. Using software-carpentry.org materials, the series will introduce you to the Unix Shell, Version Control with Git and R. It will be hands-on and cover the fundamentals of R, including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management and task automation. It will teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using R in everyday tasks. The workshop will be of interest to: active computational researchers and their teams; anyone considering a research project that requires computational research; and students eager to enhance their career choices by expanding their skill set. Space is limited so register early.  DETAILS & REGISTER

The UPEI Scholarships and Awards Office is accepting applications and nominations for the 2020 MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing. 

In July 2011, the family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize student writing achievement. The gift is to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor, and to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning.

The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing is the largest such student-oriented program in Canada.

A total of 60 awards valued at $500 each are available in 2020 for successful applicants.

Returning undergraduate students, faculty, and staff are eligible to apply for a MacLauchlan Prize for Effective Writing based on criteria for four categories:

MacLauchlan Prize for Effective Writing (Community)
MacLauchlan Prize for Effective Writing (Course Work)
MacLauchlan Prize for Effective Writing (Faculty and Staff)
MacLauchlan Prize for Effective Writing (Webster Centre)

The UPEI learning community is encouraged to review the four categories of prizes for details on submission criteria. The deadline for submissions is October 6, 2020.

There will be a UPEI Basic Biosafety training session held:

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone including graduate students.


To attend the Basic Biosafety course, you must pre-register by contacting Shelly Kavanagh, before October 8, 2020 by email (hse@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901).

The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is providing three days of flu shot clinics for all students, faculty, staff and families. There is no charge for the flu vaccine. Children must be over the age of two (2). The clinics will be held as follows:

October 23, 2020:  9:00 am–3:30 pm

October 26, 2020:  1:00 pm–8:00 pm

October 27, 2020:  9:00 am–3:30 pm

In addition, there will be an AVC Flu Shot Clinic on November 4, 2020, from 12:00 pm–7:00 pm  in the AVC McCain Foundation Learning Commons Atrium for AVC faculty, staff, students, and their families.

There are no individual appointments; instead, we will provide the vaccine on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will follow the direction of the Chief Public Health Office and maintain physical distancing. If there are more than 50 people waiting you may need to wait outside or come another time. Please note the following.

  • Masks are mandatory in all UPEI buildings.
  • Read the fact sheets (used with permission from Public Health Nursing, Health PEI) before you come for your vaccine. They are located on the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre webpage: https://www.upei.ca/health-centre/flu-vaccines
  • You must be prepared to stay for 15 minutes following your vaccine.
  • Children less than 24 months old must be vaccinated by Public Health Nursing and you will need to make an appointment. 
  • Children under nine (9) years old who have never had a flu vaccine will require a second vaccine in one month.
  • The FluMist (intra-nasal) vaccine will be available for those aged 2–17, as well as the Fluzone High-Dose vaccine will be available for individuals over 65 years of age.
  • If you have a fever or other symptoms of COVID-19, do not come to the flu shot clinics. Contact 8-1-1 for advice and direction.

October is Cyber Security Month, so now is a good time to evaluate our online safety.

Each week this month ITSS will be focusing on a different aspect of cyber security.

This is week 1 and we would encourage the entire UPEI community to look at your password habits and how to protect your email/bank and social media accounts from hackers. Passwords for your UPEI accounts can be changed on the homepage of myUPEI. 

There are some great tips here and the ITSS helpdesk can also give some advice if you need it 902 566 0465.

If your answer was yes to any of the questions above, you’re not alone!  The Stress Reduction & Mindfulness in the Workplace was developed specifically to help you transform and manage yourself.    

Facilitator, Jill Stewart, a Registered Social Worker and business owner will lead you through 6 live, online modules. Some modules include guest speakers and experts in the areas such as time management and guided meditation.  Weekly online topics will centre around Self Awareness, Personal Well-Being, Stress Management Techniques, Boundary Setting and Resiliency.

This live online course begins on Wednesday October 21st and will run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am each Wednesday until November 25th.  The course fee is $550.00 including taxes.  Check with your employer as funding may be available. Each weekly session is recorded so if you need to join late or miss a week, you can catch up when it’s convenient for you.

The PEISO will feature clarinetist Karem J. Simon with the Atlantic String Machine this Sunday, October 4 at 2:30 pm at the Homburg Theatre. Due to the limitations imposed as a result of COVID-19, attendance will be restricted to 100 people. Tickets may be obtained at the Confederation Centre Box Office. Dr. Simon will be performing works by Kukal, Babin, and Williams.

This Friday, October 2 from 12:40 pm tp 1:20 pm, our Distinguished UPEI Music Alumni Series will feature Class of 2000 alumnus Mike Ross. From his years with the Jive Kings to a career in acting and writing we will explore Mike's transformation and the impact his UPEI music degree had on his career.

The Province of Prince Edward Island, UPEI, Veterans Affairs Canada, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Startup Zone have partnered to bring you Policy Hack: Design. Build. Change. for the third year in a row! We are excited to host this newly redesigned innovation case competition. The event is offering the opportunity to create a unique, creative and meaningful professional development event for all of you that also sparks innovative ideas for the public good.

We have gone virtual! This year's policy hackathon was delayed due to COVID-19 and now is going to be delivered in a condensed, virtual format from October 13-19th (which largely aligns with UPEI’s fall Reading Week!)

The Healthy Campus Committee, as part of the Employee Wellness Strategy, will be providing FREE Yoga Stretch & Meditation Classes for UPEI Faculty and Staff. Classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:10 pm – 12:50 pm.   Classes will be on a four week (one month) rotation. Employees can only select one day per week and a month. Yoga Instructors Colleen Gallant (Tuesdays) and Pam Harris-Stewart (Thursdays) will be leading the classes. Pre-registration required. No drop-ins.
