The University of Prince Edward Island is pleased to host the 2021 CBIE Atlantic Regional meeting. This year the conference will be virtual and will be held over two half days on June 3rd and 4th, 2021. We will have a series of sessions scheduled between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on June 3rd and between 9:00am and 12:00pm on June 4th, 2021.

This year’s conference theme is inspired by the region we live in and the connectivity we all enjoy. Atlantic Canada is unique in many ways but most of all the ability to “bubble up” and move between all four provinces seamlessly while learning from one another and internationalizing our communities and campuses together. As international educators, we are always fully committed to achieving our internationalization objectives. During this regional meeting, we will explore an array of topics under our three main areas: student mobility, recruitment/retention of international students, and immigration and employment.

Synapse is excited to offer the Mitacs Project Management 2020 two-day on line workshop on May 20-21, 2021 from 9am-5pm ADT (both days)

Project Management 2020 delivers a balance of "core" project management knowledge and skills.  These are blended with practical learning on key interpersonal skills essential to successfully achieve project goals.

Over an intense, two-day course you will experience a practical opportunity to bring your project into a workshop and learn how to increase your success, using professional templates while collaborating in a supportive environment.

Learning objectives

TECHNICAL - create a project plan, conduct resource forecasts, create and manage project budgets, monitor project, conduct lessons learned analysis, define and mitigate risk, design quality into the project.

PEOPLE - Manage people that do not report to you, motivate and collaborate within teams, assess and engage stakeholders effectively, manage meetings and deliver them virtually, communication throughout the project.

To sigh up:

  1. Create an account on Edge (edge.mitacs.ca)
  1. Navigate to the “catalog” tab on the main dashboard and enroll in the workshop title of your choice

The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences welcomes the campus community to public research and teaching presentations by Dr. Arne Dankers, candidate for the tenure track position in Data Science. All are welcome to attend.

Research Talk Title: "Data Driven Modelling of Dynamic Networks". 10am-11am

Abstract: Data is not information, but there is a lot of information encoded into data! The trick of course is to design methods that are able to extract the information from the data. Imagine being able to discover the inner workings of cells (such as how they process sugar), simply by measuring the concentration of various chemicals over a time period after feeding the cell some sugar. Imagine monitoring and diagnosing the inner components of a machine based on sensor data. Imagine discovering the causal structure of an economic system by processing financial data. Using data we can peer into the structure and inner workings of complicated systems leading to scientific discoveries, effective monitoring of engineering systems, and a deeper understanding of economic, social, ecological systems among many others! In this talk I present a framework that enables the user to estimate differential equations that connect the measured variables in a data set. I present some interesting problems that must be addressed in order to improve the framework. In addition I present two areas where I have applied this framework: geology and pipeline monitoring.

Teaching Talk Title: "Model Selection" 12:30pm-1:30pm

Abstract: The model selection workflow is one of the main occupations of a data scientist. It is the procedure of collecting data, choosing a model set and then picking the "best" model. It is quite likely that the first model will not pass the validation test, and so the procedure must be repeated (many times). In this lecture I focus on the validation criterion portion of the model selection workflow. I will present k-fold cross validation as a tool to select a model structure. I will point to strategies that help to focus the modelling effort to the most beneficial action (collect more data? change the model set? choose a different selection criterion?). Code is implemented in python.

Marked annually in Canada on April 28, the National Day of Mourning is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, or suffered injury or illness on the job or due to a work-related tragedy.

The National Day of Mourning is not only a day to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy, but also a day to collectively renew our commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses, and deaths.

At UPEI, the Health, Safety, and Environment department promotes an internal responsibility system that expects all workplace parties to collaborate on identifying, assessing, and managing all workplace hazards/risks. UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment provides oversight and guidance to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation on PEI.
