The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, June 4th for the June meeting.
Please note that as of June 1, 2020 all animal user protocols must be submitted through UPEI Researcher Portal at https://upei.researchservicesoffice.com/Romeo.Researcher/
For new protocols select ‘applications’ and for renewal or amendment protocols select ‘events’.
To view any UPEI ACC SOPs and Codes of Practice, they can be accessed through myUPEI at https://portal.upei.ca/facultystaff/administrativeservices/AVCAnimalCare/Pages/default.aspx.
Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.
UPEI’s Student Union and Experiential Education department have partnered with Skills PEI to create the International Student Employment Support Program (ISESP). This program will offer a cohort of international students the opportunity to gain employability skills through a combination of professional development training and a paid internship this summer.
In order to be eligible, international students must be finishing their first or second year of studies (having completed between 30 and 60 semester hours), living in Prince Edward Island for the duration of the program, and available to work during regular business hours.
Training begins May 25th, followed by 11-week internships through the summer with local businesses, tailored to students’ career interests.

The Health Centred Research Clinic at UPEI is offering a Chronic Disease Self-Management program for any UPEI Staff or Faculty that have been diagnosed with a chronic condition for at least one year or longer.
The program will consist of weekly group exercise and education sessions at the Health Centred Research Clinic located in the lower level of the Steel Building. In order to participate individuals must be currently employed by the University of Prince Edward Island either permanently, or a contract lasting for the duration of the program and have been diagnosed with a chronic condition for at least one year or longer.
If you are interested in learning more about this program, we will be hosting a 20 minute information Session Thursday May 13 at 12:00pm online. Windows has several built-in apps that may look useless but offer helpful hidden features. For instance, the calculator app can also calculate the difference between two dates and convert basically any unit of measure, including time, energy, temperature, distance, mass, and even currency.
Windows Alarms & Clock app can calculate the time difference between two locations, even into the future. Open the app, click the Clock tab, and select the + icon at the bottom to add locations. Click the Compare icon to open a timeline. As you scroll across the timeline, the time changes on the map points, allowing you to keep track of time differences more easily.

On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, IT Systems and Services (in conjunction with the E-Learning Office) will be upgrading the UPEI Online Learning Management System (Moodle) to a newer version. This series will include a comprehensive approach to the entire body while focusing on a particular area for optimal health and vitality.

The March Island Lecture Series session featured Prof. Mark Stoddart (Memorial University of Newfoundland) and Dr. Ásthildur Elva Bernharðsdóttir (University of Iceland) discussing the financial crises of Iceland and Newfoundland & Labrador. What have these experiences had in common and what lessons can they teach us?

The Department of Pathology and Microbiology will be interviewing 4 candidates for the tenure track faculty position in Veterinary Bacteriology.
Our second candidate, Dr. Lisanework Ayalew, is a board-certified microbiologist by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in Bacteriology & Mycology and Virology specialities. He obtained a DVM degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and in 2014 completed his PhD in veterinary microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan. After completing his PhD program, he joined the Department of Veterinary Pathology, WCVM as a postdoctoral fellow and worked on developing vaccines and understanding the pathogenesis of various avian bacterial and viral diseases. He is currently working as a professional research associate at the WCVM and is involved in different research projects which mainly focus on emerging and re-emerging avian bacterial and viral diseases.

Teaching Seminar: “Bacillus anthracis”
Bacillus anthracis is a gram-positive spore forming bacilli responsible for causing the disease anthrax. The pathogen is a considerable global health threat affecting livestock, humans, and wildlife. In this mini lecture, the characteristics of the bacteria, the nature of the disease it causes, including diagnostic, control and prevention methods will be discussed.
Research Seminar: Molecular evolution of pathogens: a challenge to disease prevention and control.
Molecular evolution is the driver of change in the gene frequencies in the genome of organisms and plays an important role in the dynamics of several infectious diseases. Evolution pushes a shift in important processes in pathogens including change in virulence. Although vaccines have contributed significantly to the control and prevention of several infectious diseases of veterinary and public health importance, high mutation rates and/or genetic instability in certain pathogens produce extensive genetic and antigenic variability and the new variants can successfully break vaccine induced protective immunity and cause disease. In this research seminar, the molecular evolution of arthrotropic avian orthoreoviruses (ARVs) will be presented as an example of a challenge to disease prevention and control. Overall, genetic and antigenic features, the dynamics of molecular evolution as well as mechanism of pathogenesis of emerging variant ARVs will be discussed.

Join us on Zoom, Friday, May 7, 2021, at 2:30 pm, when Dr. Gregg French will present “Integration in an Imperial Outpost: The U.S. Empire Encounters Spain’s Imperial Legacy on the Island of Guam, 1898–1926.”
Abstract:
At the conclusion of the Spanish-American War of 1898, the once vast Spanish Empire ceded its remaining insular possessions to the United States. These islands included Puerto Rico and Cuba in the Caribbean Basin, the Philippine archipelago in Southeast Asia, as well as the isolated imperial outpost of Guam. On December 23, 1898, U.S. President William McKinley instructed the Secretary of the Navy to occupy the island and to “give it the necessary protection and government” that it required. Challenging beliefs associated with American exceptionalism, this talk will explore how U.S. naval officers borrowed from over three centuries of Spanish imperial knowledge, as they went about establishing their colonial administration on the island of Guam.

In order to accommodate UPEI on campus classroom and lab software adds, drops, or modifications for the fall semester we have set a deadline of June 1 2021.
This deadline is necessary to allow sufficient time to plan and implement the installation of new and upgraded software. This ensures our students will have the software resources they need. Any requests received after the deadline will be applied in the next round of software updates.

Research Talk Title: "The Literary Theme Ontology with Applications to Media Annotation and
Information Retrieval" 10am-11am
Abstract: Literary themes (e.g. courage, capitalism, and coming of age) make for a natural organizing hub when it comes to the study of cultural evolution. Inspired by the Gene Ontology knowledgebase resource from bioinformatics, the Literary Theme Ontology (LTO) is the first ever controlled vocabulary of literary themes that are hierarchically arranged into a directed acyclic graph structure. The LTO forms the core knowledgebase for an open access, community-based fiction studies project that classifies literary themes through the use of a hierarchically structured controlled-vocabulary, and annotates works of fiction with the themes within a collaborative framework. I will talk about the current state of this emerging line of research of mine with particular emphasis on the ecosystem of downstream statistical analysis we are in the process of developing. Finally, I will outline my vision of capitalizing on converging developments in interoperable frameworks of controlled vocabularies, online collaborative platform infrastructures, and modern data science techniques to build up a large-scale database of
thematically annotated works of fiction that researchers will be able to use to test their various hypotheses about cultural evolution.
Teaching Talk titled: "Model Selection in Bayesian Multiple Linear Regression" 12:30pm-1:30pm
Abstract: I will talk about model selection in a Bayesian approach to multiple linear regression using the Bayesian information criterion, or BIC. While my talk is directed toward upper level undergraduate students, anyone who is acquainted with Bayes' theorem and has performed a multiple linear regression
or two will be able to get the gist of it. And even if terms like "Bayesian", "information criterion", and "multiple linear regression" leave you scratching your head, rest assured that you'll leave my talk with a conceptual understanding of what "model selection" is all about. In other words: drop on by, there's something in it for anyone at the university level who is interested in probability and statistics.
