What do you need to need to make a machine learning project successful?

About this event

How can you make smart decisions about setup and execution of a machine learning project? How should you hire and support the staff working on the project? We hope to provide clear, thoughtful answers to these and other common questions to get you thinking about whether machine learning is a technology that you and your company or group should think about investing in. We will discuss topics like data collection, the trade-offs involved in choosing a model, and what to expect from a successful project, as well as how to salvage useful by-products and skills when projects don’t go as planned.

This is a beginner session oriented to business owners and project managers curious to learn more about machine learning, or who may have an idea that involves machine learning and want to know where to begin.

This session will take place on Thursday, March 24, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm (Atlantic time)

You will need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc).

Participants must register using their institutional/organizational email address (not a personal email, i.e., gmail).

Instructions about how to join will be sent out one day prior to the start of the event to those who've registered with an institutional or organizational email.

Dr. Jennifer Altman, candidate for the tenure-track position with the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts, will make two public presentations.

The first, entitled "How can psychology integrate mindfulness & body?," will take place on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at 1:00 pm in Memorial Hall, Room 308.

The second, a teaching demonstration entitled  "Chronic Pain: Assessment & Intervention," will be held on Friday, March 25, 2022, at 10:15 am in Memorial Hall, Room 308.

All are welcome to attend.

UPEI fiscal year ends on April 30, 2022.

Purchasing cut-off: April 14, 2022

The last day to create a requisition/purchase order for 2021-22 will be on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at noon with guaranteed delivery date on or before April 30, 2022.

Requisitions/purchase orders created after April 19, 2022, must have a requisition date changed to May 1, 2022, and the good and services must be delivered on or after May 1, 2022.

Receiving goods/services cut-off: April 30, 2022

Goods and services must be received on campus by Friday, April 30, 2022. Only the goods that have been physically received or completed services should be accepted at this time. This will ensure that these goods and services are paid in the 2021-22 fiscal year. Any items received in myUPEI after April 30, 2022, will be considered new fiscal year goods and services and will then be deducted from your new fiscal year budget (2022-23).

All departments are required to look at their outstanding purchase order list to see if there are any purchase orders that need to be cancelled. This functionality can be accessed through the myUPEI Self-Service Menu under "Financial Information" and the “Receive Goods and Services” selection.

If the items have been back ordered for some time, you will need to check with the supplier to see if they are still on their records as back ordered. If they are not back-ordered, then please email procurement@upei.ca to cancel your purchase order.

If you are in receipt of vendor invoices, forward these to invoices@upei.ca ASAP. Please contact apadmin@upei.ca with questions or concerns regarding billing and invoicing.

The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is moving to an electronic medical record (EMR) during the week of March 21.  Consequently, we are closed for staff training on March 22 and 23. We will re-open on March 24 at 50 per cent capacity and work our way back up to 100 per cent capacity over the next few business days to allow staff additional time to adjust to the new EMR. Currently, the staff uses paper records, so this is a significant transition. We appreciate your patience in advance as we transition from paper to electronic records. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us at healthcentre.ca or 902-566-0616.

Presentation Title:  Inventory Management and Customers’ Waiting Time”

Abstract:

First, I will introduce my research on inventory management and customers’ waiting time of these years. Then I will talk about the paper, “Fair No-Unnecessary-Waiting-Time-FCFS Allocation Rule in Multi-Item Inventory Systems.” The average customer waiting time is an important measure of service quality in systems in which customers may order multiple items. In this paper, we introduce a new allocation discipline, which not only eliminates the unnecessary waiting time of new customers by reallocating reserved items but also keeps the fairness of the first-come-first-serve (FCFS) allocation rule. We obtain analytic results of the average customer waiting time in the system with two items and unit demands under the new allocation rule, and our numerical experiments demonstrate the reduction of waiting time. We also provide an algorithm to evaluate the average customer waiting time with multiple items and batch ordering in a system. Our simulation results show that the new allocation rule can significantly reduce the average customer waiting time of some demands. Finally, I will introduce my research on the other topics.

The presentation will take place on March 18 from 12:45–1:45 pm (Atlantic Time) via the following Zoom link:

Have your exercise, sleep, or sedentary habits changed compared to before the pandemic? Yes? No? We want to hear about it! Alexander Norris, a fourth-year kinesiology student, and Dr. Hayden Atkinson are conducting a brief 10-15 minute survey to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the ability of people living in Canada to meet 24-hour movement guidelines.

To participate, you must meet the following criteria:

1. 18-64 years of age

2. Living in Canada for the majority of the COVID-19 pandemic

Message from UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment: Finding birds on campus

There has been extensive media coverage recently about the presence of avian influenza in wild birds in Atlantic Canada. The UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment office advises members of the campus community to not handle any dead, injured, or sick birds as they can harbour diseases. If you find an injured, sick, or dead wild bird on campus, do not pick it up. Instead, contact either PEI Fish and Wildlife (902-368-4683) or the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (902-628-4314).
