To purchase a student parking permit, please visit the UPEI website. In the search bar, type “Parking Permit” which will direct you to a link “Purchase a student parking permit | University of Prince Edward Island”. Or follow this link: https://www.upei.ca/office-vice-president-administration-and-finance/security/parking-services/get-student-parking-permit. (NOTE: this link will not work with Internet Explorer).
The application may time out, so please have this information ready before applying:
- Vehicle make, model, year
- License plate number
- Province/state where the vehicle is registered.
Student applications will be processed in the order that they are submitted. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. A follow-up email will be sent after we have processed your application with the date, time, and location where you can pay and pick up your pass.

The UPEI Department of Chemistry invites the campus community to a research seminar by Dr. Roman Belli, Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Minnesota, who will present "Mechanism-Guided Design for Developing and Improving Catalytic Reactions."
Dr. Belli is a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in Inorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry.

This session will cover the basics of using Moodle to facilitate your course such as setting up course sections, managing resources for students, and uploading course materials. In-person offerings will be available on August 16 and 17 with an online session on August 23.

The SSHRC Exchange Publication Awards support the publication of manuscripts, written or edited by UPEI faculty, by Island Studies Press (ISP). These awards are being funded by a SSHRC Institutional Grant; therefore, the subject matter of the publication must be compatible with SSHRC’s mandate (see http://science.gc.ca/eic/site/063.nsf/eng/h_FEE7261A.html for more information). One (1) award is available for 2023.
The award of $7,000 will be disbursed to Island Studies Press to cover publication costs, including editing, photo and other permissions, design, printing, marketing, and other costs associated with publishing a book. Authors will be offered ISP’s standard publication contract, which ensures authorial copyright and includes a royalty structure. Authors will also see their manuscripts reviewed through a peer-review process where appropriate.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Eligible applicants must be tenured, tenure-track, term, or sessional UPEI faculty, who are employed by UPEI at the time of application.
- Manuscripts may be single- or multi-authored results of academic research projects; textbooks; edited proceedings of a conference; or works of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, or drama that pertain to the author(s)' discipline.
- The subject matter of the manuscript must meet SSHRC’s mandate.
- Past recipients of the SSHRC Exchange Publication Award or UPEI Internal Publication Award cannot apply for support for the previously funded manuscript.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 1, 2023

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applicants are to submit a package that includes
- book proposal/summary (maximum of one page)
- a completed or close-to-complete manuscript and a table of contents. Note: the manuscript must be completed no later than three months after winning the award
- a curriculum vitae that includes your credentials as author(s)/editor(s)
- two letters of support (e.g., from your department chair, dean, professional association)
Selection Committee: A selection committee comprised of the chair of the executive committee of the Institute of Island Studies, plus two members of the ISP publishing committee, will assess the proposals and make a recommendation to the Associate Vice-President Research. The managing editor of the ISP will be a member of the committee in a non-voting capacity.
To assist in making its recommendations, the selection committee will use a single-blind peer review of the submitted manuscript. Final decisions on publication remain with the Island Studies Press and the Institute of Island Studies.
Reporting: A copy of the book, along with a narrative outlining the publication process – prepared in collaboration with staff at Island Studies Press – must be submitted when the book is complete.

As stated in a message issued to the campus community by the UPEI Presidential Search Committee on August 2, 2023, the presidential search is now in the consultation phase, which will run until September.
Members of the UPEI community—faculty, staff, students, and the broader community—are invited to complete a confidential, anonymous online survey to provide input into the development of the candidate profile for the president and vice-chancellor role. The survey, which can be accessed at https://eu.surveymonkey.com/r/NXHSKRH, will be open until September 8, 2023.
The survey is one option offered to the UPEI community by the search committee to provide their input during the consultation period. Other options will include written submissions, and virtual and/or in-person group meetings with some key stakeholder groups such as the University Senate, UPEI Student Union, support staff, union executives, and direct reports within the Office of the President. A note on format: We're going to try a different approach this year for Let's Talk Teaching with two timeslots before the semester begins (we'll add more if needed). The first will be Thursday, August 24, from 10:00 to 11:30 am, and the second will be Friday, August 25, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm in the Teaching and Learning Centre, Robertson Library Annex Room 230. Join us for informal sharing of questions, concerns, and inspirations as you prepare for your fall semester classes.
Our Topic: We all know that Googling something isn’t research and using generative AI to write a paper isn’t learning. In this session however, we’ll discuss how AI, when used as a learning tool and not just to generate output, can positively affect teaching and learning. We’ll discuss how you can re-examine your assignments to better align tasks with higher level learning outcomes such as critical and creative thinking and address the future of generative AI in education and the work world.

Thinking about ways to promote connection and care in your classes this fall? This brief article, Preparing and Sustaining a Classroom of Connection and Care: Practical Ideas and Activities, shares a few ideas to help you get going. A more in-depth resource developed by Student Affairs and the Teaching and Learning Centre, Promoting Student Well-Being in Learning Environments: A Guide for Instructors, offers ideas to set the tone of your course and build relationships starting from before the course begins, in the first few weeks, and throughout the semester. The UPEI Department of Chemistry invites the campus community to a research seminar on August 14 by Dr. Trevor Clark, Postdoctoral Fellow, Simon Fraser University, who will present "Effective use and integration of HRMS metabolomics for the annotation and discovery of natural products."
Abstract:
For the last decade, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) based metabolomics has emerged as the predominant way to analyze complex natural product mixtures. These data can then be integrated with biological assay data to determine priority lists for isolation and elucidation of new bioactive natural products. This presentation will discuss a few in-depth studies exploring the considerations that should be made when collecting HRMS data and discussing how to effectively use those data for the annotation and prioritization of a natural products library. We will then explore some current work applying all we have learnt and developed to a library of 50,000 natural product fractions for the isolation of anti-cancer compounds. Ending then with some future prospective projects in the area of time-based extractions combined with isotope labeling to explore a more comprehensive metabolomics assessment of microorganisms in community environments.
