The UPEI Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre is proud to host the 2023 Canada Winter Games Wheelchair Basketball and Badminton events from February 18 to March 5.   

The Canada Games Committee has agreed to allow UPEI students with an active membership to access the UPEI FITNESS CENTRE ONLY from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm during the Canada Games. There will be NO access to locker rooms, squash courts, gymnasium, or indoor track. This applies only to UPEI students with an active membership.

IMPORTANT: Students MUST access the facility through the Bell Aliant Centre to enter the UPEI Fitness Centre and show their UPEI Campus ID card to security to gain access. NO CARD = NO ACCESS.

COMMUNITY/UPEI STAFF/FACULTY MEMBERS will not have access to the Sports Centre from February 18 to March 5. Please email jalane@upei.ca or drop by the Panther Central desk to request an extension to your membership.

All Sports Centre members will have access to live virtual classes during this time period. For class schedule and registration information, please visit recreation.upei.ca and click on Virtual Fitness Programming icon, then Live Virtual Fitness Classes.

Parking during the games will be in the MacLauchlan Arena parking lot from February 18 to March 5.   

The UPEI indoor track and general locker rooms will be closed to users on Friday, February 17, starting at 11:00 am, until Monday, March 6, when regular hours will resume.

NOTE: On Friday, February 17, Canada Games will be setting up in the Sports Centre. Members will still have access to the fitness centre from 6 am to 9 pm, but please be aware the building will be very busy. 

Ethics protocols that involve "more than minimal risk" must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB). The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, February 24, 2022, for review at the March 15 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve "more than minimal risk," renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

All research compliance applications, including Research Ethics Board application forms, must be submitted through the Researcher Portal. This online system is paired with electronic approvals to replace the hard-copy signatures process. For more information about the REB review and approval process, please contact the Compliance Coordinator at researchcompliance@upei.ca.

Are you a chief warden, floor warden, or guardian for your building? Do you know what to do if there is a building evacuation? Do you have questions about your role as a warden or guardian or the evacuation procedures for your building?

UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment will hold a building emergency plan session for chief wardens, floor wardens, and guardians on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 10:15 am in Andrew Hall Room 142. The session should only take 30 minutes.

In honour of Black History Month, join the UPEI EDI office and the UPEI Mawi'omi Indigenous Student Centre in an open conversation about race and racism in Dawson Lounge on the fifth floor of SDU Main Building on February 10, at 1 pm. Please note that the location of this event has been changed to Dawson Lounge.

We will explore where we are with our understanding of anti-racism, where we want to be in leading anti-racist values, and how we can get there, as well as navigating the challenges that exist in being anti-racist.

This conversation will be co-facilitated by Amirah Oyesegun (they/them), Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Employment Systems Advisor with the UPEI Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office, and Jasmine Pauze (she/her), coordinator of the Mawi'omi Indigenous Student Centre.

The Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee invites the campus community to the next Environmental Sciences & Human Biology seminar presentation on Friday, February 10, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. in Duffy Science Centre, Room 204.

 Toyin O. Adekanmbi, MSc student in the School of Climate Change and Adaptation will present “Assessment of the Climate Change Impacts on Potato Yields in PEI using a Crop Simulation Model.” 

All are welcome.

Please note that as of June 1, 2020, all animal user protocols must be submitted through the UPEI Researcher Portal at https://upei.researchservicesoffice.com/Romeo.Researcher/

For new protocols, select "applications," and for renewal or amendment protocols, select "events."

UPEI ACC SOPs and Codes of Practice can be accessed through myUPEI at https://portal.upei.ca/facultystaff/administrativeservices/AVCAnimalCare/Pages/default.aspx

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

UPEI annually acknowledges individuals for their outstanding contributions to the success of the University. The awards are valued at $1,000 each and given in recognition of excellence of faculty, librarians, clinical veterinary professionals, clinical nursing instructors, sessional instructors, and staff.

These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 1:00–2:30 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. 

Nominations are open and must be submitted to universityawards@upei.ca by the last Friday in February each year.  This year, nominations close on Friday, February 24.

On Wednesday, February 8, UPEI faculty, staff, and students, and the general public are invited to a free screening and panel discussion of "Ice Walk" with director Eliza Knockwood and other honoured guests. This event will take place in the Hon. Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium (Room 242), Don and Marion MacDougall Hall, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

This documentary “exposes a hidden history of the exile of Prince Edward Island’s original inhabitants to a small island off its coast and explores the present-day desire of allies to rectify these injustices. The series holds space for Mi’kmaq Elders and other community members to tell their harrowing stories of crossing the ice to get basic provisions from the mainland.”
