Many of us are diving into learning about generative artificial intelligence (genAI) as we prepare for the start of the fall semester. The number of blogs and articles around genAI can be overwhelming so the TLC has been checking them out and curating a short list for your consideration. Here are a couple of blog posts to start with. For a post focused on ways to address ChatGPT with students, check out CHATGPT AND ALL THAT FOLLOWS. And here's another on Teaching AI Ethics.
The last two sessions for Let's Talk Teaching are set for Friday, August 25, in-person in the TLC (RL 230) at 11:00 and online at 1:30.
More than 100 international students have applied for the Study & Stay PEI program! If you're an international student in your final year/semester at the University of Prince Edward Island, Holland College, or Collège de l'Île, don't miss your chance to apply now at https://studypei.ca/.

UPEI and ACENET are pleased to announce that Kaitlin Newson has joined the ACENET team as a research consultant.
Based at UPEI, Kaitlin will support researchers and their teams in the use of the digital research tools available through ACENET and its national partner, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. These include high-performance and cloud computing, large file storage and transfer, and research data management. Kaitlin will work with clients both new and experienced in using these tools throughout the lifecycle of their projects, helping with problems small and large. She will also deliver workshops that teach the skills necessary to use digital research tools effectively.
While based at UPEI, Kaitlin is also able to tap into ACENET’s other research consultants when needed, each with their own specialties, including cloud, big data, molecular dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, humanities and social sciences, cybersecurity, and machine learning.

MSc Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Thesis Defense: Miranda Steeves
Title of thesis: "Development of Nanoparticles for Treatment of Triple Negative Breast Cancer”
Abstract: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women, and according to recent statistics, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. The purpose of the study is the development of non-toxic biocompatible drug delivery carriers that can be used to treat triple-negative breast cancer by combining chemotherapy and photothermal therapy.
Everyone is welcome!
The UPEI Department of Chemistry invites the campus community to a research seminar by Dr. Jacob Walsh, Postdoctoral Fellow, McMaster University, who will present "Combating Pathogens with Natural Product Discovery Methods and Applications." Dr. Walsh is a candidate for a tenure-track position in natural products chemistry.
Abstract: We live in a world ruled by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, who control and interact with the world around them using small-molecule natural products. These microorganisms occasionally cause problems for human health and food sustainability in the form of pathogens. Focusing on agricultural pathogens, this talk will outline the development and application of various techniques such as gene cluster screening, mass spectrometry, and biochemistry to identify natural products as virulence factors and pursue these key molecules to slow or prevent the pathogenicity of the microorganism. Five major projects will be presented displaying the study of natural products and future directions of agriculture disease control.
Everyone is welcome.
