As stated in a message issued to the campus community by the UPEI Presidential Search Committee on August 2, 2023, the presidential search is now in the consultation phase, which will run until September.

Members of the UPEI community—faculty, staff, students, and the broader community—are invited to complete a confidential, anonymous online survey to provide input into the development of the candidate profile for the president and vice-chancellor role. The survey, which can be accessed at https://eu.surveymonkey.com/r/NXHSKRH, will be open until September 8, 2023.

The survey is one option offered to the UPEI community by the search committee to provide their input during the consultation period. Other options will include written submissions, and virtual and/or in-person group meetings with some key stakeholder groups such as the University Senate, UPEI Student Union, support staff, union executives, and direct reports within the Office of the President. Please visit the Consultation Phase page on the Presidential Search website to learn more: https://www.upei.ca/presidentialsearch/consultation-phase

Dr. Shannon Murray, professor of English, has been awarded the 2022 Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STHLE). This is one of the highest honours awarded in Canada recognizing superior contributions to teaching and learning in higher education. Dr. Murray is well-known to our campus community as a phenomenal teacher, generous mentor, and much-valued colleague. We want to celebrate her achievement by naming an annual lecture after her, and reflecting a theme central to her published work, teaching, and character: hope. And the time is right to remind ourselves, as an academic community, of the essential role that hope must play in our collective future.

Please join us on the final day of NSO and the afternoon before the first classes of the semester to listen and reflect on the importance of hope and the academy, focus our minds on the year ahead, and honour Dr. Murray's remarkable achievement.

MSc Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Thesis Defense: Miranda Steeves

Title of thesis: "Development of Nanoparticles for Treatment of Triple Negative Breast Cancer”

Abstract: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women, and according to recent statistics, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. The purpose of the study is the development of non-toxic biocompatible drug delivery carriers that can be used to treat triple-negative breast cancer by combining chemotherapy and photothermal therapy.

Everyone is welcome!

Members of the UPEI community may have noticed a group of police officers in tactical gear on the campus over the past few days. For your information, the officers are staying in UPEI residence accommodations while participating in operations on PEI. They will be here until August 24.

The UPEI Department of Chemistry invites the campus community to a research seminar by Dr. Jacob Walsh, Postdoctoral Fellow, McMaster University, who will present "Combating Pathogens with Natural Product Discovery Methods and Applications." Dr. Walsh is a candidate for a tenure-track position in natural products chemistry.

Abstract: We live in a world ruled by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, who control and interact with the world around them using small-molecule natural products. These microorganisms occasionally cause problems for human health and food sustainability in the form of pathogens. Focusing on agricultural pathogens, this talk will outline the development and application of various techniques such as gene cluster screening, mass spectrometry, and biochemistry to identify natural products as virulence factors and pursue these key molecules to slow or prevent the pathogenicity of the microorganism. Five major projects will be presented displaying the study of natural products and future directions of agriculture disease control.

Everyone is welcome.

UPEI Professor Emeritus Karem J. Simon will officially launch his album, Solitary Clarinet, on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 10:30 am, beginning at UPEI’s new Performing Arts Centre Theatre. Admission is free. All are welcome.

If you are looking for a few ideas for revising assignments this fall in light of the presence of generative AI tools, here's a blog that walks you through an “assignment makeover” for a reading response assignment, Assignment Makeovers in the Age of AI: Reading Response Edition, and an essay assignment, Assignment Makeovers in the AI Age: Essay Edition. The posts suggest ideas and questions to consider as you rethink your assignments for the fall.

Remember that TLC team members are available to talk with instructors about course and assignment design that integrates or mitigates the use of generative AI. You’re welcome to reach out by email at TLC@upei.ca, or you can book an appointment with one of our instructional designers

The UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) department has moved to AVC 4th floor South (428S). When you come in the main entrance of AVC, head right toward ITSS and turn left to take the South stairs or elevator to the fourth floor. If you require elevator access, please give us a call at (902) 566-0901 or (902) 213-3183. This is a temporary measure. All contact information for HSE remains the same so you may continue to email hse@upei.ca or call the staff (check out the UPEI HSE website for individual contacts). You can also come see our new location.

The Physics Department invites everyone to view the sun through our telescopes today (weather permitting). Between 12:00-1:30 pm, drop by the grassy area between Memorial Hall and Robertson Library where we will have our hydrogen-alpha telescope set up to let you view the sun's atmosphere. From there, we will direct you to the Earl L. Wonnacott Observatory on the top of Memorial Hall, where you can view sunspots on the sun's surface through a white-light filter on our large observatory telescope.

Our ground-based telescope is accessible for people with all mobility levels. It is necessary to be able to climb stairs to reach our observatory telescope.

If the sky is too cloudy, the viewing will have to be cancelled. Check our website for the most up-to-date event status: https://projects.upei.ca/astronomy/

This is the final event in our series of summer solar viewings. As the evenings get darker earlier in the fall, we will return to nighttime viewings; stay tuned for details.
