UPEI takes the #MoodCheckChallenge!

UPEI is participating in a mental health initiative with universities across Atlantic Canada called the MoodCheck Challenge. From March 14-25, students are encouraged to use the MoodCheck phone application to track their moods. Twice a day, at random times, their phone will prompt them to check in and enter their mood, the activity they are taking part in, where they are, and who they are with. The goal is to motivate students to be mindful about how the things they do affect the way they feel. This increased awareness is known to be a strong predictor of improved mental health and well-being.

Students gain points each time they check-in, and gain bonus points the more often they check-in. At the end of the challenge, the university with the highest points will receive a cash donation to be used toward a campus mental wellness initiative. Prizes will also include MoodCheck “swag.”

“I encourage students to try this app for the two week period,” said Treena Smith, manager of Student Affairs at UPEI. “The wonderful thing about this challenge that students get to try this app to see if it works for them. It's about offering choices and different modes to decrease stress and increase happiness—if this app does not work for one student, it may work for another and how great is that.”

The MoodCheck app is part of a larger program called WellTrack, which was developed by Darren Piercey, a psychology professor at the University of New Brunswick. The program provides students with a number of online tools and resources aimed at helping them manage stress, anxiety, depression and specific phobias, such as fear of public speaking.

The challenge results will be announced on Tuesday, March 29.

UPEI will host a “Checkup” event to launch the MoodCheck Challenge on Tuesday, March 15 at noon. Similar to a “tweetup,” whereby people gather in one place to tweet about a particular topic, students will meet at the Wave to collectively check-in on their MoodCheck app and tweet about the experience with the hashtag #moodcheckchallenge.

UPEI students, what are you waiting for? Download the app at the App Store (for Apple users) or Google Play (for Android). Sign in as a new user with your UPEI email address and the access code MCC. Check in daily! It only takes five seconds.

Take the MoodCheck Challenge, and see how keeping track of your moods and activities can improve your mental health!

UPEI Celebrates National Co-operative Education Week

UPEI will celebrate co-operative education during National Co-operative Education Week in Canada from March 14–18, 2016. This year also marks UPEI’s 20th year of offering co-operative education programs.

UPEI co-op students will be recognized for their achievements in cooperative education at the annual Co-op Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 17, from 4-5:30 p.m., in the Robertson Library. A “Co-op Student of the Year” prize will be awarded to a student in each of the programs that offer co-operative education: Business, Computer Science, and Physics.

“Co-operative education provides participants with the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gain in their academic studies in a paid work term,” says Donald Moses, Interim University Librarian and Director of Skills, Development and Learning. “Students can experience a variety of workplace environments, develop critical workplace skills, and explore career options. They gain valuable relevant work and life experiences, employment that can be documented in their resumes, and access to a network of contacts they can leverage after graduation.”

UPEI is among many colleges and universities across Canada, developing their students into workplace professionals through co-operative education. UPEI’s Co-operative Education Program is a partnership between the student, the employer, and the institution—all of which benefit. Students gain hands-on work experience; employers have the opportunity to mentor innovative and enthusiastic students; and co-operative education provides a bridge between industry and the institution, and fosters positive relationships for all involved.

Learning About Islands: Writing an Undergraduate Textbook in Island Studies

The Island Studies Lecture Series continues Tuesday, March 22, with a lecture by Dr. Jim Randall entitled “Learning About Islands: Writing an Undergraduate Textbook in Island Studies.” The talk begins at 7 pm in the Faculty Lounge of UPEI’s SDU Main Building.

Islands have been incredibly important in how we understand the world around us. From our knowledge of evolution, biodiversity, the impacts of climate change, world music, and how adventure novels have influenced our tourist destination choices, islands and islanders have been front and centre. This talk is about one mainlander’s journey to discover the importance of islands and his attempt in the form of a new textbook to convey his new-found love of our world of islands to others.

Dr. Randall is the Co-ordinator of the Master of Arts Island Studies program at UPEI and the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Island Studies. His background is as a geographer: a field like island studies where it is important to have a passion for place and interdisciplinarity. Although he has had the pleasure of calling an island his home for only a few years, he looks forward to reaching the age of 106 so he can celebrate having lived on islands longer than on the mainland.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Saint John’s Raine Easton commits to UPEI Panther Soccer

University of Prince Edward Island Women’s Soccer Coach Graeme McDonald is pleased to announce that Saint John, New Brunswick native Raine Easton has committed to the Panthers for 2016–17.

Coach McDonald says, “Raine has a tremendous work ethic, focus and determination—both on and off the field. She is a strong fullback who has excellent acceleration and speed, a huge asset when defending and moving forward to join the attack. I am thrilled to have Raine join our squad this year!”

Easton played youth soccer under the Fundy Soccer Association under Technical Director Jason Brown. In 2014, Easton captained her club team at the Canadian Club Nationals in Mount Pearl, NL. Easton represented her home province from 2011-2015 and was selected to Team Atlantic U16 and competed at the Western Canadian Showcase.
Brown is proud of the former Fundy star and believes the possession-based, attacking model that Coach McDonald favours along with the attention to the overall student-athlete experience makes UPEI a great fit on all fronts.

He says, “Raine is an example to our young female players about dedication. It has been her goal to play at the CIS level and she has been incredibly committed to achieving that goal. I am very happy to see her join a quality program such as UPEI Panthers and I believe that she will develop into a quality CIS player as she extends what has been a rapidly growing soccer career.”

Easton’s competitiveness, ability to get forward and create opportunities, and her willingness to learn will serve her very well in a very competitive AUS Conference.

“I grew up playing soccer and always had the goal to play at the CIS level,” explains Easton. “I am excited for what UPEI has to offer me both academically and as a Panther.”

In grade 11, Easton transferred to Rothesay Netherwood School and will graduate with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Easton captained the varsity team coached by Cuilean Hendra, and competed at the CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent School) Finals two years in a row.

“It has been an absolute pleasure having Raine attend Rothesay Netherwood School as a student athlete,” commented Coach Hendra. “Raine has developed into a fine soccer player and the coaching staff is excited she has chosen an excellent school where she can continue to excel. UPEI is very lucky to have such a committed and determined student athlete join them in the fall.”

Easton will be entering the Faculty of Science at UPEI.

Research project seeks Maritime families with a member who works in the oil and gas sector in northern Alberta

A joint research project at the University of Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton University is seeking families with a member who migrates to northern Alberta to work in the oil and gas sector. The research team is led by Dr. Christina Murray, assistant professor at UPEI’s School of Nursing, and includes Dr. Ashlee Cunsolo Willox, Canada Research Chair in Determinants of Healthy Communities at Cape Breton University, and Dr. Doug Lionais, associate professor at CBU’s Shannon School of Business. The project is supported by an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

“Our team is exploring mobile work from a number of different lenses, to gain a better understanding of how our quest for energy and natural resources affects our society and our position on the world stage,” said Dr. Murray. “To our knowledge, this project is the first in Canada to explore how the coming and going between the Maritimes and northern Alberta is impacting intergenerational family members: those who leave for employment, those who are left behind, and the role of extended family members such as grandparents who support families participating in mobile work. This research will help us better understand how intergenerational family members are experiencing the coming and going of loved ones in Maritime Canada.”

A significant portion of workers in Alberta oil sands projects come from Atlantic Canada. Despite this recent labour trend, specific statistics of mobile labour flows are not known. This lack of information leaves a critical gap in our understanding of the phenomenon, particularly, the number of people leaving for employment, the number of people left behind, and the impact on individuals, families, and communities.

“Mobile work, when undertaken in such great numbers, restructures the very fabric of a community,” said Dr. Lionais. “This occurs first and foremost at the family level as members shift and adapt to having one member periodically absent from the household.”

“While we know that mobile work effects many families in PEI and Cape Breton, what we don’t yet know is the type or the extent of these impacts,” said Dr. Cunsolo Willox. “We are excited to work with families on both Islands, as well as key stakeholders, to further explore and understand the ways in which individuals, families, and communities are experiencing this type of labour structure, and working together to find ways to support both the workers and their families.”

Phase one of the research has already been completed, as the team has identified and interviewed community leaders, volunteers, and professionals who support families with a mobile family member. In phase two, the team will be recruiting families across Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton who are willing to talk about their experiences.

If your family has a member who travels back and forth to northern Alberta and would like to learn more about the project, or how to participate in it, please contact Dr. Christina Murray at 902-303-0303 or cfmurray@upei.ca.
