Yale professor to give public talk about web-based treatment for addictions

A prominent American researcher in the field of addictions treatment is coming to Prince Edward Island to give a public talk, and to discuss ways of importing her web-based treatment methods to the Island's healthcare system. Dr. Kathleen Carroll is a Professor of Psychiatry from the Yale School of Medicine. The public is welcome to attend her talk on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:00 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242 of UPEI's Don and Marion McDougall Hall.

Dr. Carroll is best known for her work in computer-based training for cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT4CBT, which has received multiple awards and recognitions for its success. CBT4CBT is being implemented within the U.S. healthcare system and has been shown in several sites to nearly double the improvement of treatment success for patients struggling with addictions.

'I'm very excited about working with the people of PEI to help them find and implement effective ways of addressing problems of drug and alcohol use,' said Dr. Carroll. 'It's very moving to see the whole Island so committed and positive about change.'

Dr. Carroll comes to Prince Edward Island as a guest of Dr. Juergen Krause, Dean of the School of Business and Director of UPEI's Centre for Health and Biotech Management Research (CHBMR).

'We are proud to be able to collaborate with such a highly decorated clinical researcher and such a renowned institution as the Faculty of Medicine at Yale,' said Dr. Krause. 'We welcome the unique opportunity to be the entry portal for this new treatment support approach to Canada, and to further improve health care delivery in the priority area of mental health and addictions.'

Dr. Carroll's talk will offer more information about this new treatment option for Prince Edward Island and Canada, and will give the public an opportunity to ask questions to learn more.

CLIVE WINS!

CLIVE, the coastal erosion visualization tool created by UPEI's Climate Research Lab and the Spatial Interface Lab at Simon Fraser University, has taken first place in the Massachusetts Institute for Technology's (MIT) Center for Collective Intelligence contest on Communicating Coastal Risk and Resilience.

Nearly 600 projects were submitted to MIT's Climate CoLab for this year's competition. CLIVE made it through several rounds of competition and broke through to the finals against two other projects. Through the support and votes from the UPEI community, CLIVE won the Popular Choice, as determined by online voting.

'I just want to say what a wonderful feeling it is that the UPEI community and campus were so supportive through the competition,' said Dr. Adam Fenech, Director of the UPEI Climate Lab. 'To win because of the support of a community, that's a nice feeling. I'll not forget this.'

Dr. Fenech and members of his team will be travelling to Cambridge, Massachusetts to receive the award in early November.

UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers add high-scoring forward Marcus Power

The UPEI Men's Hockey Panthers have landed the second-leading scorer in last year's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the addition of Marcus Power of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Power scored 31 goals and 109 points with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, finishing the season with a +/- rating of +25. His strong season caught the attention of NHL clubs and Power was invited to attend a rookie camp with the Colorado Avalanche. He was invited back to participate in the main camp last month, and was offered a contract to play in the Avalanche system but Power opted to attend UPEI after committing to the University earlier in the summer.

'At this point in my life, I felt it was best to pursue an education, and I know the AUS is such a good league that it will only help my hockey career going forward,' said Power. 'I like everything I have heard about UPEI. I am excited about the role I am going to be asked to play. It became evident to me early on that if I were to go the CIS route, it would be with the Panthers.'

UPEI Men's Hockey Head Coach Forbes MacPherson said the addition of Power is huge for his team. 'Marcus is big, strong, and talented. In the Q last year, only Jonathan Druin (Halifax Mooseheads) had more assists than Marcus, so that gives you an idea of how well he sees the ice and how well he distributes the puck,' said MacPherson. 'I expect players like Chris DeSousa, Tyler Brown, Darcy Ashley, and others will benefit from the offensive abilities of Marcus Power.'

Power says another reason he has chosen to become a student-athlete at UPEI was because of his consultations with his former junior coach Connor Cameron, a former Panther and current assistant coach with the Charlottetown Islanders. 'Connor told me what kind of coach Forbes is, how far the team has come, and how well I am going to fit in. Connor was my coach and has become my friend, and I put a lot of trust in what he had to say.'

At six-foot-one, 190 lbs., Power says he prides himself on being a player who competes and succeeds in both ends of the rink. While he knows he will be counted on to put up numbers and create scoring opportunities, Power also knows the top centres in the AUS have to be well rounded. 'I like to think there are many positive aspects to my game. In junior I put up some good numbers, but I also played the role of shut down centre,' said Power. 'I want to be counted on to be on the ice when the game is on the line. That is what top end centres have to do.'

Power is enrolled in the arts program at UPEI. He says he is in the best shape of his life and looking forward to being in the line-up for the season opener October 11 vs. UNB at Eastlink Centre. 'I'm ready to go. It should be a great atmosphere, and hopefully we can go out and get the ‘W.''

UPEI Men's Hockey season tickets are available now and include 13 games in Charlottetown and a playoff holding seat. Call the Panther Box Office at (902) 566-0368 to purchase tickets in time for the home opener.

"Those Splendid Girls" book available October 18

Over 115 Prince Edward Island women served as nurses in the First World War. They were full-blooded, complex women living in a tumultuous time in our history, doing their duty on distant battlefields. Their courage, and the courage of all Canadian nurses, is saluted in a powerful new book about wartime nursing called Those Splendid Girls, published by Island Studies Press at UPEI.

Author and nursing educator Katherine Dewar, was granted rare access to personal scrapbooks, letters home, private diaries, and wartime photo albums of Island nurses; by combining their voices and experiences with their military records, she delivers this riveting story of mud, blood, and courage that tells the story of Canadian nursing in the First World War.

At war's end, many Island nurses were unwilling to swap their wartime autonomy and authority for housework or poorly paid nursing positions on PEI, instead, they accepted senior appointments in nursing schools and in hospital administration, most often in the 'Boston States' and in California, and through these, made lasting contributions to the profession of nursing in North America. Those Splendid Girls features a 35-page biography section detailing each nurse's life, her family, education, military service, plus work, and family life after the war.

Ed MacDonald, Professor of History at UPEI, comments: '[this book] does more than restore a measure of gender balance to our understanding of that shattering conflict; it tells a ripping good yarn about women at war.'

Those Splendid Girls contains many wartime, black and white photos, reproduced for the first time. The book is available October 18, and readers can preview it at: http://thosesplendidgirls.ca
