UPEI mourns the passing of honorary degree recipient Dr. J. Clair Callaghan

UPEI was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Clair Callaghan, UPEI honorary degree recipient and former professor at St. Dunstan's University, in Halifax, on September 26, 2013. His burial took place in Rollo Bay, PEI on October 2, 2013.

'On behalf of the entire University community, I'd like to extend sincere condolences to Clair's family and friends,' said UPEI President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz. 'UPEI was fortunate to count this remarkable man-who furthered post-secondary education in the field of engineering-as a member of our family, and during this time, we, too, feel a tremendous loss.'

Born in Ebbsfleet, PEI in 1933, Dr. Callaghan began his education in his home community, but attended SDU for the completion of his Grade 12. He earned a BA from St. Dunstan's, Pre-engineering from St. FX, a Bachelor of Engineering from the Nova Scotia Technical College (later the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS), and a Master of Science from MIT. During this time, he was also an assistant teacher. From 1956 to 1958, 'Copie', as he was known by, began his academic career by heading up the Engineering Program at SDU.

Dr. Callaghan went on to serve as Assistant Professor at the Nova Scotia Technical College. In 1966, he and his family transferred to Montreal where he taught, and also served as Dean of Engineering and Computer Science, at Sir George Williams University (later Concordia). 'Copie' returned to Halifax in 1977 to become President of TUNS, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure, all phases of the university flourished.

As was noted in the SDU Class of 1953 anniversary booklet, Clair Callaghan served on many boards and presented numerous papers, 'the most exciting of which was a special lecture to the First World Congress on Engineering Education Training in 1988.' He holds patents for the Haul-Down System for the Canadian Navy and was president of Cabletec Ltd. and Allac Consultants Ltd.

In 1987, the University of Prince Edward Island paid tribute to Dr. Callaghan by awarding him with an honorary degree. He also received an honorary degree from Concordia University.

The 2013 Gairdner Lectures features world renowned medical researcher

The University of Prince Edward Island is proud to again host the Canada Gairdner Wightman Laureate for the 2013 Gairdner Lectures. In the morning of Tuesday, October 15, Dr. James C. Hogg will deliver a lecture to senior high school science students from across the province entitled 'Why is breathing important?' That afternoon, he will give a public lecture called 'Developing new treatments for chronic lung disease.'

The afternoon lecture is open to the public and is free of charge. The event begins at 2:00 pm in McMillan Hall of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.

Since earning his PhD in experimental medicine from McGill University in 1969, Dr. James C. Hogg has remained focused on the study of obstructive lung disease. He has advanced our understanding of how both healthy and diseased lungs work, including asthma, and the effects of smoking and pollution. He built a world-renowned centre for pulmonary and cardiovascular research at St. Paul's Hospital in British Columbia, which trains more than 100 professionals every year. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a member of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

The Gairdner National Program is a 10 day-long lecture series given by Canada Gairdner Award winners to over 6,000 students at 21 universities from St. John's to Vancouver. The National Program reaches students across the country, making the superstars of science accessible and inspiring the next generation of researchers. Along with the Canada Gairdner Awards, the National Program is part of Gairdner's efforts to promote a stronger culture of research and innovation across the country.

The Gairdner Foundation: Making Science Matter

The Canada Gairdner Awards were created in 1959 to recognize and reward the achievements of medical researchers whose work contributes significantly to improving the quality of human life. They are Canada's only globally known and respected international science awards, and Gairdner is the only national organization that consistently brings the world's best biomedical researchers to Canada to share their ideas and work with scientists across the country. In so doing, it enlarges networks and enhances Canada's international reputation, while providing a realistic and unbiased benchmark for Canada's leading scientists.

Dr. Kate Tilleczek recognized with prestigious Whitworth Award

The Canadian Education Association (CEA) announced today that Dr. Kate Tilleczek, UPEI's Canada Research Chair in Youth Cultures and Transitions, has been honoured with the Whitworth Award. The CEA has awarded the Whitworth Award every three years since 1967, in recognition of individuals who have made a sustained and substantial contribution to education research over time.

In a news release, the CEA states that this award recognizes Dr. Tilleczek's work in articulating the impacts of modern society on marginalized students in the context of transitions through school, mental health, and technology.
'With the complexity of young peoples' social lives today, there are many teachers coming to me to say that mental health issues are the number one problem that kids are up against and they don't know what to do,' says Dr. Tilleczek in the CEA release. 'And you also can't overlook the incredible impact of technology on students' academic and social lives-both the good and bad of it.'
'This award confirms what we at UPEI already know,' says Dr. Robert Gilmour, UPEI's Vice-President Research and Graduate Studies, 'that Kate Tilleczek is an outstanding, dedicated researcher. Her work with marginalized children and their challenges as they move through school addresses an area that affects students and families across the world. I want to congratulate her on this award, on behalf of all of UPEI.'
Dr. Tilleczek will be formally recognized with the Whitworth Award later this month at a ceremony at the CEA's national conference in Calgary. Read the full release from the CEA here.
