A Simple Meal: So that others might eat

The PEI Quakers in cooperation with the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre will sponsor “A Simple Meal: So That Others Might Eat.” This free meal is open to UPEI university students, faculty and staff, with a suggested donation of $5-10, payable in either cash or canned foods. All foods and/or funds collected will be donated to the UPEI Food Bank. The menu will consist of Cuban beans & rice, a salad, beverage and fruit. During the meal, at 1:00 pm, Ann Wheatley, a founding member and current co-chair of the PEI Food Security Network will speak on the topic of food security and how it impacts Islanders. Ms. Wheatley is also a member of Cooper Institute, where she works on projects related to livable income, inclusion and food sovereignty. Much of her work involves engaging with community, and helping to ensure that all people have a chance to make their voices heard in agency and governmental decisions and policy-making that impact our lives.

Campus Project Kick-Off

Members of the campus community are invited to join President Alaa Abd-El-Aziz,CIO Dana Sanderson, and Ellucian representatives at a kick-off event that will shed some "light" on the cross-campus, transformative project formerly known as ERP. We'll announce the "Name that Project" winner and reveal the new project name for the initiative that deals with the changing and developing of many UPEI processes and the supporting technology that interacts with them. Coffee, cake, and conversation will be served! All are welcome.

“World Quaker Day” Open House at UPEI Chaplaincy Centre

On Sunday, 4 October 2015, the The PEI Quaker Worship Group will host an Open House/Meet & Greet at the Chaplaincy Centre, UPEI, from 1:30-3:00 pm to celebrate the international "World Quaker Day.” A variety of literature and informational brochures will be available for browsing, and local Quaker members will be present to answer any questions that people may have regarding the Religious Society of Friends. We will serve light snacks during the open house. All attending this event are are invited to join local Friends for an hour of traditional Quaker silent worship beginning at 3:15 pm.

Outrun Stigma

The charity event, Outrun Stigma, will be in coordination with the PEI Marathon - this year race weekend is October 17/18. We are encouraging all members of the UPEI community to do their part to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. There are 3 ways for students, staff, faculty, and administration to participate: Register! Walk or run in any of the PEI Marathon Races (5k, 10k, 15k, etc.)  and when they register via Race Roster they'll have the opportunity to make an online donation to Outrun Stigma. Volunteer! Marathon PEI is providing set honorariums to all of our volunteers and those honorariums will go toward Outrun Stigma. Buy a ticket! If you are unable to volunteer or participate during race weekend, you can purchase a $10 contest ticket at the Student Union.. The winner of the contest receives round trip airfare and seven nights accommodation to the destination where WestJet flies. Half of each ticket sold ($5) goes towards Outrun Stigma The aimed outcome of this charity event is to bring awareness and discussion to Mental Health, and ultimately help to eliminate stigma surrounding the subject. The money raised by all those who contribute to Outrun Stigma will go into the UPEI Student Union's Mental Heath Initiatives Fund. This fund was created after a number of students identified the lack of mental health prevention and awareness resources on campus in March 2015. Recognizing that all members in the UPEI community are affected by mental health issues, the goal of this fund is to enable students to plan and execute initiatives that raise awareness and address issues of mental health. Examples of projects could include speaker series, peer support groups, stress busting events during exam week, film screenings, workshops, etc. Another aspect of the event is that counsellors at UPEI Student Affairs do not want the exercise and discussion to end after October 18. They would like to start a walk/run club that will also help to facilitate dialogue and eliminate stigma surrounding mental health. They're also hopeful that some members of this club will dream up some positive initiatives and apply to the Student Union's Mental Health Initiatives Fund.
