Vatican Astronomer Comes to UPEI
Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers host an annual lecture named for their first Episcopal Liaison, Bishop John Sherlock. The 2015 Sherlock Lecture speaker is Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, Vatican Astronomer. The lecture will be Thursday May 28 2015 at 7:00 pm in the UPEI Duffy Ampitheatre, on campus. Admission will be by free-will offering to support Brother Guy’s work at The Vatican Observatory.
Thursday’s lecture "At the Margins of the Universe: The Vatican's Astronomical Observatory" will include why the Vatican supports an observatory and how we do outreach to people on the margins who also hunger to know about their place in the universe.
Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, the President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. A Jesuit brother and astronomer at the Vatican Observatory, his research is in meteorites and asteroids. He is a native of Detroit, Michigan, received BA and MA degrees from MIT, and earned his PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1978. Along with more than 200 scientific publications, he is the author of six popular astronomy books. In 2014 he received the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences for excellence in public communication in planetary sciences.
Girls Get WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Camp
On Saturday, May 23rd, a one-day science, engineering, math, and technology camp is offered for girls in grades 7-9 from 9:30am-3:45pm at UPEI. The aim is to expose participants to hands-on science activities and careers so that they can make informed decisions about subject choices in later school years.
Girls will participate in an engineering project, design in CAD, explore biophysics, and perform chemical experiments. They will also meet female role models who are working in the science, engineering, and technology fields.
The event is hosted by IslandWISE (Women in Science and Engineering), EngineersPEI, ITAP (Innovation Technology Association of PEI), and UPEI. Deadline for abstract submissions - UPEI Multidisciplinary Graduate Research Conference
The first annual graduate research conference will be held from August 6 to August 8, 2015, at the University of Prince Edward Island. Students in any graduate program from across Canada are invited to submit a presentation abstract by June 10, 2015. Proposals received after this date will not be considered.

UPEI Multidisciplinary Graduate Research Conference
The inaugural University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Multidisciplinary Graduate Research Conference (UMGRC) is a pan-Canadian, refereed, academic conference designed to showcase the work of graduate students at UPEI and beyond.
The theme of the conference is, “Emerging Scholars: Illuminating Graduate Research.” The conference will offer graduate students across Canada the opportunity to present their graduate research with either a poster or a paper presentation, acquire skills and knowledge through workshops, and participate in dialogue and discussion between and within disciplines.

Holland 250 Lecture - Stephen J. Hornsby
A well known geographer, historian and author will present the fourth in a series of free lectures presented by the Samuel Holland 250 Commemorations Committee on May 14.
Stephen J. Hornsby is Director of the Canadian-American Center and Professor of Geography and Canadian Studies at the University of Maine. Originally from southern England, Hornsby received his M.A. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, where he was a Commonwealth Scholar.
Hornsby has published extensively on the historical geography of northeastern North America and the Atlantic World. His book Surveyors of Empire: Samuel Holland, J.F.W. Des Barres, and the Making of The Atlantic Neptune has won three awards, including Publication of the Year Award from the Prince Edward Island Museum & Heritage Foundation in 2012, and the Pierre Savard Award from the International Council for Canadian Studies in 2013. The book examines the development of British military cartography in North America during and after the Seven Years War, as well as advancements in military and scientific equipment used in surveying. At the same time, he follows the land speculation of leading surveyors, including Samuel Holland.
The lecture, which is part of a monthly series commemorating Samuel Holland’s survey of Prince Edward Island, will be held Thursday, May 14 at 7 pm in Room 242, the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at UPEI.
