UPEI clarinet professor Karem J. Simon will team up with Nova Scotian collaborative pianist Jennifer King in a recital of music for clarinet and piano on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. Its title, Fräulein Klarinette, refers to the name affectionately given by Johannes Brahms to Richard Mühlfeld, whose exquisite musicianship and clarinet tone inspired Brahms to renege on his proposed retirement and write several chamber works for clarinet.

Brahms’ Sonata, Op. 120, No. 1 forms the centrepiece of this recital’s programming. It is among the most respected works of the clarinet repertoire and is remarkable in showcasing Brahms’ understanding of the technical and expressive elements of the clarinet. Other works by Louis Cahuzac, Ernest Chausson, Leonard Bernstein, and Adolf Schreiner will be performed.

UPEI is delighted to have Jennifer King return to its concert stage. She has established a career as a versatile pianist, equally comfortable in solo and chamber roles. In September of 2018, she was involved in the presentation of Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, and last January, she visited Charlottetown to perform music from her first solo CD, O Mistress Moon!

Tickets are $25, or $10 for students, and may be acquired at the admission’s desk the night of the recital.

After a busy weekend on the road, the Panthers are back on home ice/court. Both men’s and women’s basketball teams host a pair of four-point games at crucial points in their respective seasons. Men’s Hockey hosts the number-one team in the country Friday night. UPEI Women’s Hockey digs in for a couple of games, including the annual Shoot for the Cure/Pink in the Rink fundraiser in support of breast cancer research.

Friday

UPEI Women’s Basketball hosts St. Francis Xavier University Friday evening at 6:00 pm. The women are tied for first in the AUS. Every game counts.

“The team is excited to play this weekend in front of our great home crowd,” said coach Matt Gamblin. “This is the busiest time of year in the AUS, and every game is important as we make our run toward the playoffs.”

The men play X at 8:00 pm.

“This is a big weekend for our team,” said coach Darrell Glenn. “We play against two very well coached programs and limiting our turnovers throughout the weekend is going to be critical.  We will need to do a much better job of moving the ball and taking higher percentage shots, and we will have to do a good job of getting back in transition to take away easy point opportunities.”

Friday night is International Night for UPEI Basketball, with special guests from UPEI’s International Society, Study Abroad Canada, and École-Sur-Mer in Summerside.

In MacLauchlan arena, the UPEI Men’s Hockey team takes on the University of New Brunswick. The puck drops at 7:00 pm.

“We will obviously have to be ready to go against UNB,” said coach Forbes MacPherson. “They just came off of handing U de M a 10-0 loss. They are firing on all cylinders. They are a very dangerous team. We will need to be prepared and at our best!”

Saturday

Saturday afternoon sees the annual Pink in the Rink game for UPEI Women’s Hockey, as the Panthers take on the University of New Brunswick. Cancer survivor Nora McKenna will drop the puck at 2:00 pm.

“The team is looking forward to playing UNB this coming weekend,” said coach Bruce Donaldson. “We are presently tied with each other, so it kind of feels like a playoff match. We have not defeated UNB yet this year, so they have had our number.”

“After seeing what positive change we created after last year’s event I am so thankful to be able to plan and organize the breast cancer awareness events again for the second year in a row,” said Emily March with UPEI Women’s Hockey. “We have such a strong and supportive community, and it’s always so heartwarming to see fans, students, and other athletes come out to support this cause. As a Panther family, we will continue to fight this horrible disease.”

Sunday

Shoot for the Cure runs Sunday for UPEI Women’s Basketball as the Panthers host Dalhousie University. The game begins at 1:00 pm with a ceremonial tip-off with cancer survivor Linda Burns. The game will feature a bake sale, raffle draw, and Shoot for the Cure T-Shirts.

The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success since it was launched in the fall of 2007, with over $1.25 million in donations to date. All 47 U SPORTS women’s basketball schools will once again participate in the program for the eighth year in a row.

I as well as so many others have been touched by the stories and the strength of people affected by breast cancer,” said Kimeshia Henry with UPEI Women’s Basketball. “On January 20^th, we are able to bring the community together to educate, raise funds and bring awareness in hopes of aiding in the fight to combat breast cancer. My team and I are so lucky to be part of this battle and we won’t let up until the fight is won.”

The men tip off against Dalhousie at 3:00 pm.

UPEI Women’s Hockey suits up for another game Sunday, this time in the O’Leary Community Sports Centre arena. The game against Mount Allison begins at 2:00 pm.

“While Mount A has not won many games this year, they played very well against us recently,” said Donaldson. “I thought they were the better team, and we were able to figure out how to score one more goal. Our goal is to get better each and every game. Mount A will be ready to go, so we need to be as well.”

Dr. Fred Kibenge has been appointed editor of the journal, Aquaculture, effective December 1, 2018. Dr. Kibenge is professor of virology at the Atlantic Veterinary College and chair of the Department of Pathology and Microbiology.

The SJDAWC is calling for applications from potential graduate students for the 2019 Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Graduate Scholarship. The scholarship will support the training of researchers at the master’s or doctoral level to pursue animal welfare research at the University of Prince Edward Island. Both applied or more fundamental approaches to research pertaining to animal welfare are welcome. Applications for 2019 will be accepted until Friday, February 22, 2019, at noon (AST), with the decision to be announced in April. Students may take up their award at any time of the year but must do so within 12 months of the date of the letter of offer. Please note that all potential graduate students must identify a graduate faculty member willing to supervise the student, should the application be successful. This information must be included with the application.

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to Kimeshia Henry and Milorad Sedlarevic, the UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for January 14 to 20!

Kimeshia Henry is a fourth-year science student from Ajax, Ontario and a guard on the UPEI Women’s Basketball team. The Panther extended their winning streak over the weekend to 9 games and now sit all alone at the top of the AUS Women’s Basketball standings. UPEI Women’s Basketball also jumped to the number-ten spot in Canada as ranked by U SPORTS. Henry recorded 10 points, five steals, and 2 assists in the Panthers 74–50 defeat of St. Francis Xavier University and 14 points and 2 steals in the 77–50 win over Dalhousie. “Kimeshia had a great weekend for us at home and has been very consistent in her stellar play all season,” said coach Matt Gambliln. “Her skillset and ability to make plays really adds to our offensive firepower.”

Milorad Sedlarevic is a fifth-year business student from Jesenice, Slovenia and a forward on the UPEI Men’s Basketball team. The Panthers lost to St. Francis Xavier 78–74, and edged out Dalhousie 70–67. “Milorad had his best scoring night as a Panther, dropping 27 points on 5-10 shooting from the three-point line against the Dalhousie Tigers, who are ranked number 7 in the country,” said coach Darrell Glenn. “He showed the poise and sharpshooting that this young team is going to need if they have any chance of making the post season.”

Dr. Cora Gilroy, associate professor of clinical pathology at AVC, was presented with UPEI’s 2018 Janet Pottie Murray Award for Educational Leadership on December 13, 2018. This prestigious award was established in honor of Janet Pottie Murray, mother of Dr. Shannon Murray, an English professor at UPEI. Dr. Murray noted that her mother, while not a teacher herself, celebrates and supports excellence and leadership in teaching. The purpose of the Janet Pottie Murray Award is to encourage excellence in teaching at UPEI by acknowledging those teachers who exemplify such excellence and those who contribute more generally to the improvement of the quality of university teaching. Among her accomplishments in teaching, including being honored with previous awards, Dr. Gilroy guided significant revisions to second-year and fourth-year teaching and student assessment. Congratulations, Dr. Gilroy!

The UPEI Department of Music presents the finals of the annual Dr. Frances Gray Music Competition on Friday, February 1 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall (snow date is Saturday, February 2, 7:30 pm). A highlight of the academic year, this performance features those who are among this year’s finest emerging artists. Performers include soprano Taylor Donald (fourth-year Bachelor of Music Education student in the studio of Dr. Sung Ha Shin-Bouey), percussionist Ryan Drew (fourth-year Bachelor of Music student in the studio of professor David Shephard), soprano Tara Llewellyn (third-year year Bachelor of Music Education student also in the studio of Dr. Sung Ha Shin-Bouey), saxophonist Joana McKearney (fourth-year year Bachelor of Music student in the studio of Dr. Karem J. Simon), and tenor, Ian Soloman (third-year Bachelor of Music student in the studio of professor Stephen Bouey).

The distinguished adjudicating panel for this year's finals recital includes Jeffery Bassett-Jones, Steve Bellamy, Donald Fraser, Valerie MacKenzie, and Shannon Scales.

Representatives from Grant Thornton’s PEI office, Kathy O’Rourke, Managing Partner; Chris Gallant, Partner; and Ryan Innis, Principal, joined UPEI President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, Dean of Business Jurgen Krause, faculty, and several students recently to officially open the Grant Thornton Entrepreneurial Playground.

Housed within the Hostetter Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, which aims to advance entrepreneurship education and research, especially in industries of relevance to PEI, the Grant Thornton Entrepreneurial Playground is a collaborative space that encourages creative discussions, presentations, and meetings.

“Grant Thornton’s generous support is a testimony to their belief in the quality of our programs and education we are delivering at UPEI,” said President Abd-El-Aziz. “Their contribution is more than just a financial one to upgrade space; this initiative has given us the opportunity to create an environment for students to succeed as entrepreneurs. And most importantly, members of Grant Thornton’s PEI office will serve as mentors to our students. I am so very thankful to Kathy, Chris, and Ryan at Grant Thornton for championing this initiative.”

Grant Thornton has contributed financially to develop the physical space, but members of the PEI office will also participate in activities such as mentoring students who have a business idea and need support in bringing their idea to fruition. In particular, Grant Thornton will offer expertise in accounting, financial services, and tax planning.

Matthew Pauley, Assistant Professor, Entrepreneurship with the Faculty of Business and Director of the Hostetter Centre indicated that the Playground concept has already begun to take off.

Pauley said, “We have already met with over a dozen students from several faculties. I’ll first be working one-on-one with them to develop business plans around their idea. Then, along with a network of mentors and experts, we will assist them after they begin their business and are in the early, vital stages of being entrepreneurs.”

Two students who have started working with Pauley at the Centre, and who attended the Playground opening, are Rudolph Al Aswad (Faculty of Business, Finance major) and Iker Zulbaran (Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering). They are looking to convert what started as an idea in the Engineering club into a business.

Zulbaran said, “We knew we needed support to help us launch our concept into the marketplace. The Grant Thornton Entrepreneurial Playground and Hostetter Centre will provide the assistance we need to develop a strategic business and financial plan. We are very thankful for their help.”

Grant Thornton has a long association with UPEI and each year hires 4-5 students into its CPA program. 

Gallant said, “Grant Thornton is proud that many of our employees in the PEI office, as well as many clients, are UPEI graduates. We are equally pleased to be associated with the Playground, which will help develop future entrepreneurs. We look forward to being on-campus to help students grow their ideas into businesses.”
