The UPEI Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for their Distinguished Alumni Awards. These awards are presented to graduates for their outstanding contribution to knowledge, the arts, the community, the university, or humanity. The Inspiring Young Alumni Award is presented to a graduate, under the age of 40, who has shown outstanding determination in achieving success at a young age. A service will be held in memory of our colleague Janice Robertson on Friday, May 31 at 2:00 pm in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre gymnasium and led by campus minister, Sister Sue Kidd. As part of the service, there will be an informal opportunity to share stories about Janice. All are welcome to attend. Once funeral arrangements are confirmed, details will be relayed as soon as possible to the University community.

However, this is not to say that I will not accept other nominations. If I receive a nomination for a currently vacant position between now and this Friday, May 31 at 12 pm, the name will be entered into the running for election. Here is a list of the currently uncontested positions: • Vice President Internal • Media Relations • Science Representative • Arts Representative • Nursing Representative As of now until next Sunday evening (June 2, 8 pm), the campaigning period is open, so I would encourage the candidates to talk to fellow grad students about the GSA, the position they are running for, and why they should vote for them. Voting will take place through your UPEI campus login on June 3 and 4.
From May 29-June 7, the Registrar's Office will be holding first-year registration for all students beginning at UPEI in September 2013. This registration will take place in two separate sessions--9:00 am and 1:00 pm–-daily in the language lab of the Robertson Library. There will also be a parents' lounge in the current periodicals study area on the library’s second floor. Like humans, pets can be affected by a variety of cancers. Many types of cancer in animals can be treated, and some can be cured. Dr. Pierre Amsellem, a small animal surgeon at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), will discuss pets and cancer during a community workshop on Wednesday, May 29, from 7-8:30 pm in Lecture Theatre A. Dr. Amsellem is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and an ACVS Founding Fellow in surgical oncology. During the workshop, Dr. Amsellem will discuss the causes of cancer in pets, prevention and detection of cancer, and new diagnostic and treatment options. He will also talk about the goals of treatment and quality of life issues affecting pets with cancer. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. This workshop is part of the 2013 AVC Community Workshop Series, presented by AVC Friends and Family, the college’s community-based volunteer organization. All UPEI employees and students are welcome to attend FREE yoga classes every Wednesday from 12:00-12:45 pm at the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre. When the weather is nicer, we'll move the class outdoors in the quadrangle area. Please bring your own towel and/or mat, and don't forget to bring some water to hydrate. Fitness instructor Anna Lacroix will help you relax and focus on your inner strengths. The program is provided to UPEI employees and students through a partnership with UPEI Wellness and the Chaplaincy Centre, and will take place for the whole summer.
