Wael Alsaedi's presentation is entitled “Decomposition Kinetics of Nanocomposite Materials" and Mark Nabuurs's presentation is entitled "Identification of Biopesticide Candidates for the Control of Agricultural Pests and Pathogens in Major Canadian Crops".  The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

UPEI Athletics and Recreation is partnering with the Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club to host the "Wendel Clark and Friends" game at MacLauchlan Arena on Thursday, February 11. Game time is 7:00 pm.

The Clinic for Patient-Oriented Research at UPEI asks for the campus community’s assistance with regard to parking for its patients. The Clinic is offering a guided exercise and education program in the Steel Building to patients with moderate to severe cases of Chronic Obstructive Pulminary Disease (COPD).

To allow easier access to the Clinic for these patients with COPD who have difficulty breathing and cannot walk long distances, the University will be reserving 15 spots at the metred Visitor Parking lot located between Steel Building and the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre. The metres will be reserved from 12 noon–3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from now until the end of March. During these times, the metres will feature blue reserved parking hoods.

UPEI asks that people refrain from parking in these spaces so that Clinic visitors have a positive experience while on campus and thanks you in advance for your co-operation.

There will be a UPEI biosafety refresher training session on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm in Kelley Memorial Buiding, Room 210.

This session is required for those who attended the Basic Biosafety course in 2013 or earlier. It is not a substitute for Basic Biosafety. Topics to be covered include a review of basic biosafety principles, a practical approach to spill cleanup, and an update on what’s new at UPEI in the field of biosafety.

To attend the Biosafety Refresher course, you must pre-register by contacting Angela Deighan, Research Services and Graduate Studies, before February 12, 2016 by email (adeighan@upei.ca) or by phone (902-628-4308). There will be a UPEI basic biosafety training session on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 9:00 am -12:00 noon, in Kelley Memorial Building, Room 210.

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to graduate students. Please note: those who have not attended a training session since 2013 are currently due for the Biosafety Refresher Course.

Please be advised that the Government of Canada is once again sponsoring the Canada Summer Jobs program designed to help employers create summer job opportunities for students.  Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in Fall 2016.

Public and private-sector employers are eligible for a wage subsidy of up to 50% of the provincial/territorial adult minimum hourly wage – in PEI the minimum wage will be $10.75 an hour as from June 1, 2016. The process of applying for Canada Summer Jobs has changed this year. To apply for this Program you will need to contact Monique Geurts, Human Resources, 566-0515, before February 22, 2016.

Effective Monday, February 1, 2016, the front counter in the Registrar's Office will have new hours of operation. From September to April, the office will be open for counter service from 9 am-4:30 pm.  From May to August, the office will be open for counter service from 9 am-4:00 pm.

Staff will be available by phone and email from 8:30 am onwards.

The best university alumni hockey group in Canada will be holding its Panther Hockey Alumni Night on Saturday, February 6.  It actually starts in the afternoon with a mini-tournament comprised of four teams of alumni players using both ice surfaces at MacLauchlan Arena. Leading up to UPEI-SMU game that night is the walk-on introduction of all former players followed up by a reception in the south end of the arena where the full-length windows provide an ideal viewpoint for the UPEI-SMU game. (Game time is 7:00 pm.)

Karem Simon in Collaboration with Atlantic String Machine

UPEI Clarinet Professor Karem J Simon will partner with the Atlantic String Machine in Strings Attached II, an intimate evening of chamber music, on Saturday, January 30th at 7:30 PM at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. Works by Johannes Brahms and Carl Maria von Weber will be performed. Tickets -- $15 Adults, $10 Students – may be acquired at the music department office or at the admission’s desk prior to performance.

As part of its winter 2016 series of events, the Senate Committee on the Enhancement of Teaching is organizing a blog—with short articles about academic freedom as it relates to pedagogy and curriculum, and some short responses from committee members to get some conversation going! We invite everyone on the campus community to read and comment—on the original article or on other people’s contributions. Let’s get a conversation going about what this issue means and some of its implications for teaching and learning at UPEI.

The presentation of a learning/career e-portfolio is a requirement for each student in the Bachelor of Education program at UPEI.

We would like to invite the campus community to attend one or more sessions during which a small group of pre-service teachers will each present his/her e-portfolio to demonstrate individual growth in becoming a professional educator through the various aspects of the B Ed program.

Each pre-service teacher will present for approximately 15 minutes after which the audience will be invited to discuss or ask questions.
