This presentation will give a brief overview of the Autism Spectrum and how it affects individuals. It will discuss the characteristics and behaviours associated with autism, as well as the sensory issues often experienced by those on the spectrum.

UPEI’s Department of Athletics and Recreation invites you and your family to an open house to celebrate the grand opening of new fitness studios in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre! The open house runs 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 1.

The new studios include a new, two-storey 2,400 square-foot activity training centre, which features a lower floor to accommodate general fitness classes and an upper-level training area equipped with stationary bicycles and interval training capabilities. The new studios are available for private fitness classes, such as spin and yoga.

Use of the fitness centre during the open house will be free. Join us for a tour of the facility at 10:30 am and noon, and take part in free fitness classes in the new studios. The gym will feature a Kids Zone with camp counsellors, face painting, and activities to entertain the kids while parents explore the facilities.

Information will be available about all of the programs and services at the UPEI Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. Community memberships will be available!

Yoga class will continue to be held every Wednesday from 12:10 pm – 12:55 pm at the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre. This program provides a full body strength and flexibility workout which tones the body. Long stretches will melt away stress and create a feeling of deep relaxation. Please bring your own mat and/or towel and water.

Fee for each class is a donation to the UPEI food bank - $5 or food donation.

As part of the Women in Science Speaker Tour, sponsored by Science Atlantic in partnership with WISE Atlantic, Dr. Karen Crosby, Mount Allison University Biology Department, will be visiting UPEI on Friday March 31st, 12:30-1:30, Duffy Science Centre Rooom 204. The purpose of this tour is to showcase the research of female faculty in Atlantic Canada. More information can be found here. PEI Energy Systems has identified a leak in the district heating lines at the Health Sciences Building branch. In order to repair the line it will require a shutdown of the heating system and domestic hot water for the Health Sciences Building (cold water is not impacted). This shutdown is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, 2017 beginning at 7:00am and is expected to take approximately 8 hours to complete.

To do the repair PEI Energy Systems will be required to excavate an area on the south side of the Health Sciences Building, as of a result the access road between the Health Sciences Building and SDU Main Building will be closed.

The Psychology department at UPEI is hosting another lecture in the Fiona Papps Colloquium Series entitled "How music shapes the mind: Benefits of experience and costs of deprivation."

Jonathan Wilbiks, PhD, a McCain Postdoctoral Fellow at Mount Allison University will present on Friday March 31, 3:00 - 4:00 pm in Memorial 308. Reception to follow in Memorial 213. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend!

This colloquium is part of the annual series of talks to discuss research and ideas in the study of human conduct, thought, and experience.

The contract for the interior demolition of Dalton Hall has been awarded to TNT Construction and Maintenance. Construction is expected to begin Monday, April 3, 2017 and is expected to take approximately 8 weeks to complete. The area will be considered a construction zone. The work will consist of the demolition of the interior of Dalton Hall, including electrical and mechanical. It will also include some exploratory work of the existing foundation.

While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this renovation project that will enhance the facility.

Please consider proposing a deserving colleague for nomination for the Association of Atlantic Universities Distinguished Teaching Award or the Anne Marie MacKinnon Educational Leadership Award.

Normally, nominees for either award will already have received an institutional teaching or leadership award. Each Atlantic university may submit two nominations for the teaching award and one for the leadership award each year, and all UPEI nominations must be submitted through the Faculty Development Office. The Faculty Development Office will also be pleased to assist in preparation of the nominations.

The 2017 Student as Scholar grant competition is accepting applications! Student as Scholar grants are intended to support instructors developing particular inquiry-based learning experiences in undergraduate courses at the University of Prince Edward Island. Funds can be requested for the purchase of resources, supplies, and equipment or to defray other costs related to the development and implementation of research-based projects that engage students in the context of a “for credit” course. Funds may not be used to supplement a faculty member’s personal research agenda. All faculty and term instructors are eligible to apply.  Although requests may be up to $5,000, applicants should be aware that the full amount will only be awarded under exceptional circumstances.
