Do you have plans yet for the winter break? How about taking part in some interesting professional development? For two full days on February 20th and 21st, attend a workshop that focuses around the concept of practice teaching. A small group of peer instructors get together to teach short lessons in front of each other from a prepared lesson plan in order to gain feedback on their teaching in a low-stakes and collegial environment. Sessions will also be video-recorded and participants will be provided with a copy of their sessions for later review. Co-sponsored by the E-Learning Office and the Faculty Development Office, the workshop is designed to help enhance the teaching effectiveness of new and/or experienced educators at UPEI. Participants will also have the opportunity to work at the process of giving and receiving feedback. A light breakfast and coffee/snack breaks will be provided each day. Lunch is on your own. There will be a UPEI Basic Biosafety training session on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 9:00 am–12:00 pm in AVC 287N. (Please note: those who have not attended a training session since 2014 are currently due for the Biosafety Refresher Course.)

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone including graduate students.

To attend the Basic Biosafety course, you must pre-register by contacting Kathryn Harrison, before February 5, 2018 by email (kharrison@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901). Please provide your name, department, your supervisor’s name (if applicable), email address and phone number in your email or voice message. Please indicate if you are a graduate student.

Power Shutdown

There will be a power shutdown for the Atlantic Veterinary College. This shutdown is necessary to complete an electrical switchgear upgrade for the AVC. The shutdown is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb 10, 2018 beginning at 5:00pm and is expected to take 10 - 12 hours to complete. This will result in the normal power being shutdown for the entire building. Emergency power will not be affected.

In order to prepare for this shutdown, Facilities Management are required to complete some preliminary electrical work, which will result in a power shutdown for the heat pumps, the central elevator and medical air. This shutdown is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 4, 2018 beginning at 6:00am and is expected to take 3 - 4 hours to complete.

With the increase in quality and quantity of cognitive sciences research over the last few years, what of it can be usefully applied to teaching? This workshop aims to summarize that research on memory and learning and provide instructors with tips for integration into their teaching. Offered by the E-Learning Office, this workshop is available on either February 14th from 10:00 to 11:00 am or on March 13th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Location is the Robertson Library, Room 265. The UPEI Department of Music's annual Dr. Frances Gray Performance Competition Finals Recital will occur on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 7:30 pm at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. This year's competition theme is contemporary music and five finalists from a pool of eleven outstanding performances have been selected for the finals. The performers include Ryan Drew (percussion), Alexandra Smith (mezzo soprano), Taylor Poirier (alto saxophone), Leah Jordan (clarinet), and Johanna Vessey (clarinet). Collaborative pianists, Frances McBurnie and Morgan Saunier, will be assisting these soloists. The evening will conclude with the presentation of awards as determined by the competition's panel of adjudicators: Donald Fraser, Kay Linkletter, Wendy Shilton, Lloyd King, and Louis Garson.

It's that time of the year! The 2018 UPEI Career & Summer Job Fair will take place on Wednesday, March 7 from 10:00am - 2:00pm.

The storm date is Thursday, March 8 from 10:00am- 2:00pm. 

Space at the fair is very limited (and these tables will be shared), so if you are interested please register at your earliest convenience. Spaces will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis, with preference given to departments who will be hiring for summer 2018. 

Boxed lunches are available upon request for $20 each.

The PEI History of Medicine Society is pleased to welcome Dr. Adam Rostis, St Mary's University, our first exchange with the Dalhousie History of Medicine Society, funded by the Robert Pope Foundation. His timely talk will look at the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, both formed in the aftermath of war, but in different eras and contexts. Given the changing nature of conflict and the ever-increasing humanitarian cost of war, what can we learn from the formation stories of these iconic organizations that may shed light on how humanitarianism might look in the future? The event is February 7 at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Loung of UPE's SDU Main Building. All are welcome.

Come to the Atlantic Veterinary College this summer for an interactive, fun, and engaging venture into the world of veterinary medicine! At the college’s annual Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp, you will learn about animals, meet others who share your love of animals, and participate in fun, educational activities. You’ll get a taste of what being a veterinarian is really like!
Junior camps (grades 7–9) are scheduled for July 9–13 and July 16–20; senior camps (grades 10–12) take place from July 23–27 and July 30–August 3.

Join Jaclyn Borden, Learning Strategist, Accessibility Services, as she presents a “how-to” for teaching students affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This presentation will give a brief overview of ASD and its impact on students' learning and success. It will provide practical tips for supporting the learning of students with ASD in different classroom scenarios such as class participation, group work, and assessments. The event starts at noon on Wednesday, January 31 in the Faculty Lounge of UPEI's SDU Main Building.

This year we are networking with Bell who is incorporating their Let's Talk initiative with our efforts aimed at promoting healthy eating and mental health awareness among the staff and student body. Also, Kettle Black, a local student-run business will be providing the chef and food for the event. Kettle Black's owner sees this as a way to give back and promote our venture. Soup is served from 11:30 to 1:00 pm in the Chaplaincy Centre.
