Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB). The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday September 28 2018. They will be reviewed at the October meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after September 28 will be reviewed at the November 2018 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

The Department of Psychology welcomes faculty, students, and the campus community to join us at our next Fiona Papps Colloquium Series event entitled "Quantitative and Qualitative Methods in Psychology: A Psychology Department Roundtable Discussion". The discussion takes place on Friday, September 28th at 1:30pm in MCDH 243. Hope to see you there.

Through a partnership between UPEI and Synapse, a number of registrations are available, at no cost, for faculty and students to attend Invest Atlantic 2018, an entrepreneurial educational and networking event that is being held at various locations in downtown Charlottetown on Wednesday, September 19 and Thursday, September 20. Representatives from more than 200 start-ups, entrepreneurs, investors and post-secondary institutions in the region will be attending this event that includes keynote speakers, public "pitch sessions" by selected start-ups to potential investors, and plenty of opportunities to network in a social setting. Please share this opportunity with students and colleagues who wish to learn more about the growing entrepreneurial community in the Atlantic Region.

Dr. Stevan Springer, assistant professor in the UPEI Department of Biology will present the next talk in the ESC-HUB Seminar Series. The title of his talk is "Molecular tests of adaptation: Darwin in full genetic resolution. It will take place on Friday, September 14 at 12:30 pm in Duffy Science, Room 204.

The monthly meeting of the UPEI & Friends Neuroscience Journal Club will be held on Friday September 14, 2018 from 3-4 pm in the lecture theatre (note the change of location) of the Duffy Research Centre (NRC). All neuroscience research students as well as faculty, scientists and staff with an interest in neuroscience topics are welcome to attend. Drop in Art - bring your own supplies and take some time to create. The event is Wednesday, September 19 from noon until 2:30 pm in the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre.

No prior experience necessary.

Any medium welcome- Crayons, colouring books, knitting needles, acrylics, pencils.. you bring it, you create it! 

This is an open event, bring your own art supplies and take a few minutes for yourself. Come and go as you please. You do not need to be creative to participate, just have an interest in expressing yourself! 

This is the first event - bring your ideas and suggestions for future Art for the Soul meetings. Open to Staff, Students, Faculty.

Check out the Stars! A stargazing event outside the Robertson Library!

Robertson Library and the UPEI Department of Physics are celebrating Science Literacy Week, September 17 to 23, by co-sponsoring a stargazing event on Sunday, September 23 at 8:30 pm.

Megan Glover, UPEI Department of Physics, will give a presentation on navigating the night sky and how to set up and use the Library’s Dobsonian telescope.

You will discover how to find objects in the sky using star maps and learn stargazing tips!

In the case of a rainy or cloudy evening, the presentation will be held inside Robertson Library.

Check out the stars @ home! You can borrow the telescope from the Service Desk in the Robertson Library with your UPEI Campus Card. The telescope can be borrowed on a 7-day loan.

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, October 5th for the October meeting. 

Ensure you download the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/research-services/research-certifications/animal-care, use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms (only current forms will be accepted).

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.
• Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302
• Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca 

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

Dr. I. Dowbiggin, Department of History will present a seminar titled "Towards the Therapeutic State: Or, How Trump Anxiety Disorder Became a Reality".

This event is Tuesday, September 18 at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre B. All are welcome. 

UPEI will host an evening of Japanese cinema to mark 90 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Japan. The Japanese Film Festival will be Friday, September 14, beginning at 6:00 pm in room 104 of UPEI’s K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre.

The evening, presented by the Japanese Consulate, will include two feature films. The screening of “Chihayafuru: Musubi” will begin at 6:00 pm. “Close-Knit” (Karera ga honki de amu toki wa will screen at 8:00 pm. Both will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles.

All are welcome.

Journalist, broadcaster, and historian Gwynne Dyer returns to UPEI for a lecture on the return of nationalism as a movement around the world. Dyer will present “The Populist Revolt: its causes and cures” at 7:30 pm, Thursday, September 13 in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at UPEI. The lecture is free and is presented by the SDU Institute for Christianity and Culture.

Registration for the "Reigniting Curiosity and Inquiry in Higher Education: A Working Conference" being held at UPEI November 2-4th, 2018 is now open! Spots are limited!

Are you interested in reigniting your students’ desire and ability to inquire“? Are you interested in being part of a group of SoTL researchers actively investigating Issues of curiosity and inquiry in the university classroom? This working conference will bring together teaching professors/researchers from across North America to discuss effective ways to increase and maintain student inquiry in our higher education classrooms and explore how to help our students to transfer those attitudes and skills to other academic learning experiences, the workplace, and beyond. During the three day working conference, attendees will have the opportunity to share their own experiences and learn from those of others, participate in the creation of professor and student curiosity and inquiry materials, and form research interest groups which will begin actively collaborating on curiosity and inquiry research questions particular to higher education.

Dr. Michael Moore, Director, Marine Mammal Center at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Cape Cod, will give a public lecture called “Food for Thought: How we all kill whales” on Friday, September 14, at 7 p.m., in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, UPEI. 

Human activity in the marine environment is increasingly having an impact on cetaceans—whales, dolphins, and porpoises—sometimes resulting in the unintentional entanglement and death of animals. Dr. Moore will discuss these pressing issues, which concern Canada and other nations that have substantial fishing and shipping industries in marine environments. There is no charge to attend Dr. Moore’s lecture. All are welcome to attend.

Dr. Moore's presentation is part of AVC's 2018 Animal Welfare in Practice conference, which is focusing on the timely topic of whale stranding. The conference will take place at the University of Prince Edward Island from September 14 to 15.

Dr. Bill Whelan (Professor and Chair, Department of Physics) will host an informal session on tips for applying for NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) funding. In addition to being a Co-Investigator on a successful RTI grant application, Dr. Whelan has served as a member of the NSERC Grant Selection Committee GSC-29 (General Physics) and numerous other grant review panels for NSERC, CIHR, and the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute. All are welcome, but please note that RTI applicants and co-applicants must each currently hold or be applying for an eligible NSERC research grant at the time of application, such as a Discovery Grant or Collaborative Research and Development Grant.
