The University of Prince Edward Island expresses its condolences to the entire Jewish community on the senseless act of hate and violence that took place at a synagogue in Pittsburgh last Saturday. UPEI wishes to inform the campus that PEI's Jewish Community is holding a Candlelight Vigil in memory of the 11 victims of the shooting rampage and in support of those wounded. The Vigil will take place Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 3 pm in front of Founders Hall, at the corner Water Street and Prince Street in downtown Charlottetown. All are invited and encouraged to attend in solidarity as a way to show their support.

If you are looking for opportunities to give back to your community, meet new people, and have new experiences, volunteering with the Red Cross could be the right place for you! The Red Cross is currently looking for volunteers for its Health Equipment Loan Program at the Charlottetown office as well as the Disaster Management Team. Check out the link provided or call the office at 902-628-6262 for more information.

Privacy breaches on campus should always be internally reported. However, on November 1, 2018 the law will change to create new legal requirements which affect parts of UPEI. In certain circumstances, UPEI will be required by law to report privacy breaches to Federal Privacy Commissioner of Canada and directly notify the people impacted by the breach.

The change was made to PIPEDA (the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act).  While these rules do not apply to the core functions of UPEI, it does apply where UPEI collects, uses, or discloses personal information in the course of true commercial activities.

To ensure compliance with our legal obligations, and to manage the situation properly, a privacy breach should be reported immediately to the Vice-President Administration and Finance, Jackie Podger. Failure to comply with the new rules could be an offence under the regulations, with a possible fine of up to $100,000.

Employees should also be aware that while this change only applies to commercial activities, UPEI is subject to a number of privacy obligations, and employees should seek guidance in any privacy breach.

If you have questions about these changes please contact the Chief Access to Information and Privacy Officer Patti Wheatley at pjwheatley@upei.ca or 902.894.2840.

However, it can also pose a bevy of problems if it is not introduced properly and monitored correctly. The workshop will take place on November 14th from 10:30 to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER

Screening for breast cancer can detect cancers at an earlier and more treatable stage. Mammography is an X-ray of the breast and can be done at either the Queen Elizabeth Hospital or Prince County Hospital. If you are at average risk and over 40 years of age, check out the following website: https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/health-pei/pei-breast-screening-program.
If you are considered higher risk (family history of breast cancer, have had radiation to the chest prior to age 30 or have a gene mutation such as BRCA1 or BRCA2) talk to your primary care provider about what screening is right for you or contact the UPEI Health & Wellness Centre at 902-566-0616.
