Title: Impact of Climate Change on Bacterial Kidney Disease in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

Everyone Welcome

Our annual UPEI Global Village Multicultural Festival takes place on Friday, November 15 at 6:00 pm in McMillan Hall of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre. The UPEI Global Village Organizing Committee is excited to invite the public to celebrate with us during our free multicultural event. It is an opportunity to celebrate campus diversity, community building, and friendships while learning about other cultures, enjoying performances, and dancing.

The festival brings together various ethnocultural groups and community organizations in an effort to build a stronger and supportive community. The Global Village is an exciting opportunity to bring domestic and international students and community members together to collaborate, promote, explore and learn about each other’s cultural backgrounds in an interactive and engaging way. “Not everyone has the opportunity to go out and see the world, so it’s nice to be able to bring a little bit of the world here for everyone to enjoy,” said Russell Kleinveldt, one of the members of the Global Village Organizing Committee and an international student from South Africa in the Master of Education program.

This September, the number of international students enrolled at UPEI is the highest in its history, amounting to over 28 percent of the student population. There are more than 93 countries represented in the international student body at the university. For more information on the UPEI Global Village, please contact Nouhad Mourad at the International Student Office at nmourad@upei.ca or (902) 566-6092.

UPEI's Executive MBA program offers a high-quality learning experience for working business professionals. The program is designed for those working in, or aspiring to work in, a management or leadership position. Classes are offered bi-weekly on Fridays and Saturdays with the option to complete the program in 20 months.

Central to the program design is an evidence-based management approach which helps students develop the skills and knowledge to make better-informed and well-supported decisions both in the program and in applied situations in their workplaces.

To learn more about this exciting opportunity, UPEI's Faculty of Business invites you to attend the following information session. Learn more about the program and application process, have your questions answered, and meet with staff, faculty and students.

We encourage you to call 902-894-2866 or email mba@upei.ca to reserve a seat. For more information about UPEI's Executive MBA program, please visit www.upei.ca/emba or email mba@upei.ca

Robertson Library, WUSC UPEI , and the Rotaract Club of UPEI invite you to attend a screening of the documentary The Staging Post.

The Staging Post was produced and directed by Australian documentary filmmaker Jolyon Hoff.

The purpose of the film will be to raise money for the Shine A Light Program, an initiative that provides women and girls within refugee camps the opportunity to better their education prospects.

Admission is free, but there will be donations accepted at the door.  Any amount can make a difference in someone's life.

Doors open at 5:30 pm, show starts at 6:00 pm

The decolonizing reading group is meeting again on Monday, November 18, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm, in Memorial 308. Come join your colleagues in a discussion about knowledge and research and some important questions that a concentration on decolonizing raises around these central focuses of our profession. We'll be discussing the Introduction and Chapter One of Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous Peoples, by Linda Tuhiwai Smith (2012). It's available as an ebook on the Robertson Library website: https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/upei/detail.action?docID=1426837. The Island Lecture Series November lecture will be held Tuesday, November 19, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge and features Charlottetown visual artist Brenda Whiteway talking about her most recent undertaking, the White Sands PEI Shoreline Project. Her presentation melds images and words to create “Shifting sands: Capturing climactic and cultural change through art.” For her, this current work is a metaphoric petri dish through which cultural and climactic shifts may be viewed on an intimate scale and expressed creatively. Through it she explores the passage of time—particularly as it relates to rural life, past and present—and the effects of urbanization and technology on traditional ways of life. Admission is free and all are welcome.

On Wednesday Nov 20, 2019, ITSS will be conducting routine maintenance on the MyUPEI portal from 8 pm to 12 midnight. During this time there may be intermittent access and performance issues with accessing and using MyUPEI.

We encourage students, faculty, and staff who may need documents or links located on myUPEI to plan ahead and bookmark or download the resources they may need during this period.

Title: Field imaging and deep learning for plant phenotyping

Speaker: Mark Eramian (University of Saskatchewan)

Plant breeders want to create crop varieties with physical traits, also known as phenotypes, that increase crop yield so we can feed more people. Image-based plant phenotyping potentially offers more objective observations, higher throughput, and denser sampling compared with manual plant phenotyping by humans in the field allowing breeders to make better selections. This talk will present highlights of research into field imaging and breeding plot phenotyping being conducted by the Deep Learning for Plant Phenomics team, part of the Plant Phenotyping and Imaging Research Center at the University of Saskatchewan.

All are welcomed to attend!
