The Island Lecture Series December 10 lecture in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge features a visiting scholar from Jamaica, Dr. Dacia Leslie, speaking about Jamaica’s prison system: “'Don’t Discard the Utilitarian Aims': Revisiting the UK Prison Offer." One of the extended controversies surrounding the J$5.5 billion ($51.8 million CAD) offer of the United Kingdom in 2016 to help build a modern prison in Jamaica concerns the extent to which the offer was a form of “penal humanitarianism.” Dr. Leslie’s talk offers a pragmatic lens through which we might gain deeper insight into the justifications for Jamaica’s rejection of the offer. Dacia Leslie is a Research Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social & Economic Studies (SALISES), The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. She is also a 2019 recipient of the Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership Scholarship that is being hosted by the Institute of Island Studies. The lecture gets under way at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Mental Health First Aid is a nationally accredited program designed to increase awareness, challenge attitudes, and introduce intervention skills related to mental health issues and supporting those experiencing difficulties.  The two-day, 12-hour workshop will be offered by the Department of Student Affairs on December 18 and 19, 2019 free of charge to UPEI faculty, staff and students.  Enrollment is limited.  Please email saworkshops@upei.ca to register or to make inquiries.

Members of the UPEI community are invited to a workshop on practical approaches to communication and conflict with Dr. Cheryl Picard, a member of the Applied Communication, Leadership & Culture faculty, from 24 January at 6pm to 25 January at 5pm. The workshop is free, but participants are asked to commit to the entire event. Dr. Picard is a leading scholar and practitioner in the skills of mediation and conflict resolution. She is the founder of the insight approach, a learning-centered method of mediation which will be the subject of the workshop. This is a great opportunity for students to learn from someone with training in criminology and social work, and to get better connected to some of the people in these fields. Space is limited and priority will be given to ACLC students, but after the RSVP deadline additional seats will be opened to other members of the UPEI community. Please contact student representative Katie Clark (keclark2@upei.ca) for more information. RSVP by 10 January, 2020.

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.

UPEI will observe the day by lowering the flags in front of Kelley Memorial Building to half-mast.

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women, as part of its PEI Purple Ribbon Campaign, will hold memorial services in both Charlottetown and Summerside, marking 30 years since the Montreal massacre. The theme of the campaign this year is, "SUPPORT SURVIVORS. Support the person ~ Involve the community ~ Right the World."

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering will also join with engineering schools across the country to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the shooting by hosting a special event at 5 pm.
