Campus Notices

The UPEI Campus Food Bank has adjusted protocols to keep up with CPHO and UPEI requirements. We continue to welcome 50-60 students weekly in 30-minute intervals to limit waiting times. And we can do this because we have volunteers!

Please look at the schedule for March and April 2022 (see here), and if you have an hour to offer this important UPEI outreach opportunity, we would appreciate your assistance.

Thank you!

Sister Sue

We're returning to in-person teaching soon, but you have a few students who can't come to campus and you're wondering about handling small group activities with students online and in the classroom. In Distinct but interrelated communities: An approach to hybrid teaching, you'll find a case study that describes how one instructor has handled this situation. Maybe it will spark ideas for you.

Plan on doing some school work next week? The UPEI Writing Centre will provide a reduced schedule (online appointments only) during Reading Week, including Islander Day!

Let our patient and knowledgeable tutors help you understand assignment expectations, brainstorm, research, organize, identify and correct language errors, cite correctly, and much more. We can also help you prepare, refine, and practice your presentations.

Make your appointment at https://upei.mywconline.com/. For regular updates and links to helpful resources, visit our Facebook page at http://facebook.com/UPEIWC

“Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms” (freedomtoread.ca). That includes having access to all reading materials.

Books, magazines, newspapers, and other materials are challenged in Canada and around the world all the time. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood are among those that have been challenged in Canada.

We encourage you to come to the Robertson Library and check out our selection of books that have been challenged in Canada in our Freedom to Read Week display. A description of where, when, and why the book was challenged is attached to each book.

Pick up a sheet (or a few) of the Freedom To Read word search puzzles and challenge yourself to find all the listed words in the puzzle.

And, don’t forget to share your favourite banned or challenged book.

Visit the Freedom to Read Week website for additional resources and information on censorship, free expression, and intellectual freedom.

PEI Community Reads is hosting a virtual event with Desmond Cole, author of The Skin We're In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power, on Wednesday, March 2,  at 7 pm. Yolanda Hood, of Robertson Library and an organizer of PEI Community Reads, and Tamara Steele, executive director of the Black Cultural Society of PEI, will moderate the event.

This event is free but registration is required at https://bit.ly/32I8Sos. Copies of The Skin We're In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power is available for sale at The Bookmark, Charlottetown’s locally owned, independent bookshop, at a 15% discount. You can also borrow a copy from the Robertson Library or the PEI Public Library.

Desmond Cole is a renowned activist, journalist, broadcaster, and author. He's spent the last 10 years reporting and commentating on politics and social justice. His first book is the national #1 bestseller, The Skin We're In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power

PEI Reads is a joint initiative of the UPEI Robertson Library, the UPEI International Student Office, the UPEI Student Union, the PEI Public Library Service, Charlottetown Rotary Club, the Rotaract Club of UPEI, and the Black Cultural Society of PEI.

We're hoping that winter weather won't mess with the rescheduled session on Research Budgets for New(er) Faculty. Take advantage of the change of pace during break week to grab your lunch and join Maria Steele from Research Services and Deidre Smith from Financial Services to learn more about managing a research budget on Wednesday, February 23, at 1:00 pm. Anyone with questions about research budgets is welcome to join. Click here for the Zoom link.
