One of the responsibilities of patients (See Patient Rights and Responsibilities:https://www.upei.ca/health-centre/rights-responsibilities) who visit the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is to attend appointments and be on time. Sometimes life happens, and you need to re-schedule an appointment. Please do so by emailing the health centre at healthcentre@upei.ca or telephoning 902-566-0616, and we can re-schedule you to another time.

When you do not attend a booked appointment and do not attempt to re-schedule, we miss the opportunity to give that appointment to someone on the waiting list.

If you need to re-schedule your appointment no problem. Just contact us, and we can find something that works for you as well as provide the available appointment to someone who is waiting.

For more information about the UPEI Health and Wellness No Show Protocol, check out this link: https://files.upei.ca/healthcentre/upei_health_and_wellness_no-show_protocol.pdf.

The UPEI Health & Wellness Centre is pleased to offer another year of the CHANGE Program. The program is for individuals at risk of or living with metabolic syndrome.  People with metabolic syndrome have at least two of the following five conditions: pre-diabetes/diabetes, high triglycerides, high "bad" cholesterol (LDL), low "good" cholesterol (HDL), high blood pressure, and abdominal adiposity (carry your weight in your middle).

The program is offered in communities across PEI and at UPEI. It is a year-long program; you will meet 28 times over the course of the year. The focus is on diet and exercise. With the dietitian, you will focus on the Mediterranean diet, and with the kinesiologist, you will learn how to exercise safely in your own home. You do not need to purchase any equipment, and the program is free.

For more information or to register, contact the CHANGE Program by email at change@upei.ca or telephone 902-620-5156.

UPEI offers music and theatre studies programs that inspire students to excel and share their gifts around the world. With this in mind, we kindly ask for your support so we can enhance our programming, provide state-of-the-art equipment, renovate the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, and help shape a new 400-seat performing arts venue so that our students are set up for success!

Join other supporters and become a “part of the fabric” in UPEI’s performing arts venues by naming or dedicating a seat. Having a seat named, in either the Dr. Steel Recital Hall or the new performing arts venue, is a unique and meaningful way to celebrate your or your loved one’s passion for the performing arts, while at the same time providing crucial support for students.

In recognition of your donation of $5,000, a plaque engraved with your name or dedication will appear and remain forever on a seat. You will receive a personalized thank you from us, a photo of the plaque, and an opportunity to see it once it has been affixed to your seat.

Name your seat today with a gift of $5,000 payable over five years. For more details, please contact Kathy Weatherbie, UPEI Development Officer, at krweatherbie@upei.ca or 902-626-6791. We appreciate your consideration!

Monkeypox is a viral infection with a rash that may be painful. Other symptoms could include headache, fever, chills, exhaustion, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle, joint or back pain. Symptoms usually develop within 5-21 days after being exposed to the monkeypox virus, and the symptoms could last 14 to 28 days. If you have symptoms, isolate and contact your primary care provider or local public health nursing office for advice.

The monkeypox virus can spread from one person to another or from contaminated objects through:

  • contact with the lesions or scabs that may be found on the skin or mucosal surfaces (such as the eyes, mouth, throat, genitals, anus, or rectum)

  • contact with body fluids (such as blood, saliva, or semen)

  • direct contact with shared personal items (such as clothing, bedding, or towels)

  • sexual activity, including oral and non-penetrative contact

  • close physical contact with others (such as during sports, parties, or raves)

For more information, go to canada.ca/monkeypox

NOTE:

Vaccine and antiviral treatment

A supply of Imvamune vaccine for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and TPOXX antiviral treatment (if needed) is available in PEI should cases occur. In addition, individuals who are planning to travel to outbreak areas and engaging in activities that increase the risk of exposure to monkeypox should contact their local Public Health Nursing office to discuss whether they should be getting vaccinated as a preventative measure.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis

The CPHO is recommending that individuals who are traveling to areas where monkeypox is circulating and plan to engage in activities that increase their exposure to monkeypox (e.g., frequenting bath houses, sex work, or sexual activity with more than one partner) should consider pre-exposure prophylaxis with Imvamune vaccine. Local Public Health Nursing offices will be administering the vaccine to those for which pre-exposure prophylaxis indicated.

The UPEI Health & Wellness Centre will be offering mass flu clinics around the third week of October in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. These clinics will be open to all students, faculty, staff, and families. There will be no charge for the flu vaccine (free); it has been provided by the Chief Public Health Office (CPHO) of Prince Edward Island. Please bring a provincial health card or student ID (if an international student) as we need to track vaccinations for the CPHO.
