Title: An Assessment of Islanders' Information Needs and Preferences Related to Concussion Care for Children and Youth

Abstract:  Concussions have emerged as an important public health issue, especially among children and youth, as they are disproportionately more likely to suffer head injuries. It is critical that all stakeholders are aware of the signs and symptoms related to a mild traumatic brain injury, as well as basic concussion knowledge, as most diagnoses rely on the self-reporting of symptoms. To determine the gaps related to concussion knowledge and to identify where education should be targeted in Prince Edward Island, a community health needs assessment was completed to inform the development of an educational strategic plan. Study findings highlighted the need for not only fundamental concussion knowledge but also information around specialized services offered in PEI, as well as return-to-sport and school strategies. The development of an evidence-informed website for concussion information and a list of services offered in PEI would be a great start to easily increase public knowledge of concussions.

Date/Time /Location: Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 9:30 am, Health Sciences Building 106

Everyone is welcome.

The deadline for animal care protocol submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, July 7, for the July meeting.

Please note that as of June 1, 2020, all animal user protocols must be submitted through the UPEI Researcher Portal at https://upei.researchservicesoffice.com/Romeo.Researcher/

For new protocols, select "applications," and for renewal or amendment protocols, select "events."

UPEI ACC SOPs and Codes of Practice can be accessed through myUPEI at https://portal.upei.ca/facultystaff/administrativeservices/AVCAnimalCare/Pages/default.aspx

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

Come and hear our story of the 34 UPEI people who participated in the May 2023 Medical Global Brigade in Guatemala. We will share the work it took to get there, what we did as volunteers in mobile medical clinics, and the learning and results we achieved.

All are welcome to join us on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 6:00 - 6:45 pm (PEI time):

  • In person in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering Building, Room 128A. Free parking is available in Lot C.

Our UPEI Campus Foodbank will continue to be open to students each Wednesday from 2:00--6:00 pm.  News reports of high food insecurity ring true in our experience as the number of student weekly visits is higher than this time last year.

Please use this link to volunteer for one-hour time slots for July, August, and yes, even September if you can think that far ahead.

As always, thank you!

Sister Sue and Lauren

The PEI Firefighters Association will be on campus on Thursday, June 16, at 1:00 pm to provide fire extinguisher training to any interested staff members of the campus community. If you have never used a fire extinguisher, this is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience without any danger during fully simulated training.

This event will be held in the outdoor area in front of the Central Utility Building. There will be a 15-20 minute discussion followed by a hands-on simulation!

Please register as spaces are limited due to the hands-on nature of the training. To register, contact Jacky Buell at HSE@upei.ca or 902-566-0901. The registration deadline is June 5, 2023.

With tools like ChatGPT now a part of life, work, and civic engagement, should capability with these tools be considered a learning outcome in and of itself? Consider this question with Professor Phillip (Phill) Dawson, co-director of the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University, and Sarah Elaine Eaton, associate professor at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary, two scholars whose work continues to be at the forefront of issues arising from the emergence of Chat GPT and other generative artificial intelligence. Learn more about generative artificial intelligence in the context of future-authentic assessment, a way of assessing that considers both current and future realities of a discipline during their virtual presentation on June 8, 2023.
