This basic one-day course offers lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills. 

The cost of registration will be covered by HSE for all UPEI faculty and staff, including students who require training for on-campus employment. Students who do not require training for on-campus employment are welcome to attend; however, the cost of registration will not be covered. Please note that lunch will not be provided.

PEI Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) would like to share planned activities for Emergency Preparedness Week, May 7-13, 2023.  This year’s theme is “Be prepared. Know your risks.”

Scheduled Outage - Moodle May 10

On Wednesday, May 10, ITSS will conduct routine maintenance on the Moodle application and related services from 9 pm to 12 midnight. During this time, there will be intermittent access to and performance issues.

We encourage students, faculty, and staff who may need documents or links located in Moodle to plan ahead and bookmark or download the resources they may need during this period.

The search committee for the Dean, Faculty of Education, announces upcoming public presentations by each of the finalist candidates. Since the search process began last summer, the committee has undertaken a comprehensive search and selected the following finalists for a series of stakeholder meetings on campus. Convocation is almost here! UPEI employees and faculty are invited to attend the Convocation exercises being held from May 16 to 19, at 10:00 am each day at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. Each ceremony is preceded by a procession of graduates across campus. 

  • Tuesday, May 16—Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Nursing
  • Wednesday, May 17—Faculty of Business and Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering
  • Thursday, May 18—Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Graduate Studies (Master in Global Affairs only)
  • Friday, May 19—Faculty of Science

Although the new format of four ceremonies allows more flexibility in terms of seating, guests are asked to present invitations in order to be admitted to the Sports Centre. Staff/faculty members can pick-up their invitation by contacting Eileen Kinch at kinch@upei.ca. Guests must present their invitations in order to be admitted to the Sports Centre. Faculty members who have regalia and wish to participate in the Academic Procession, are asked to line up with the graduates in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering building concourse 45 minutes before each ceremony.

ACENET Basics: Job Scheduling with Slurm workshop on May 12

The national systems use a job scheduler called “Slurm”. In this session, you will learn how Slurm works and how it allocates jobs, helping you to: minimize wait time by framing reasonable requests; ask for only the resources you need, to improve efficiency; increase throughput; run more jobs simultaneously; and troubleshoot and address crashes. This workshop is designed for new HPC users, or for experienced users either transitioning to Slurm or seeking to improve efficiency with the scheduler. Prerequisites: Completion of Introduction to Linux and Introduction to Shell Scripting, or prior experience with both.

Linux is the terminal interface used to enable you to use supercomputing clusters from your desktop. It's the tool you need to get your data on the clusters, run your programs, and get your data back. In this session, learn how to get started with Linux, how to create and navigate directories for your data, load files, manage your storage, run programs on the compute clusters, and set file permissions. This workshop is designed for those with no prior experience in working with a terminal interface.

Basics of Computers workshop on May 5

Most of us have experience using a computer, whether for school, work, or entertainment, but how many of us have actually had an expert teach us how to use it? This talk won't teach you how to troubleshoot everything, but will give you insight to how media, programs, and data are encoded and used by computers, so you can make more sense of why computers behave the ways they do, and solve some of your problems with greater efficiency and less frustration. We will provide an approachable overview of how a computer works, by both looking at their history and breaking one down to explain individual components, before highlighting some of the trade-offs to consider when buying a computer. We will provide practical, simple, and actionable advice on digital security and show you a few "pro tips" on how to make the most of your workstation, phone, or whatever device you happen to use. Whether you have a lot or a little experience using your digital technology, if you want to learn how to use your devices more effectively, this workshop is for you!

UPEI Faculty of Medicine information session to take place May 4

The University of Prince Edward Island will host an information session for students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or learning more about the new Faculty of Medicine and joint Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at UPEI in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland. The session will take place on Thursday, May 4, 2023, from 6:00–7:00 pm in the Kelley Memorial Building, Room 211. 

There will be a general presentation and overview of the new Faculty of Medicine, followed by a Q&A session with UPEI representatives including Dr. Greg Naterer, Vice-President Academic and Research; Dr. Cathy Vardy, Executive Director, Medical Program Development; Jeff MacLean, Manager of Admissions; and Paul Young, Chief Operating Officer, UPEI Faculty of Medicine.

Pre-registration is not required for this session.

Meditation and Gentle Yoga  for UPEI staff/faculty FREE

The Healthy Campus Committee provides two FREE Meditation and Yoga classes per week for UPEI faculty and staff. The 45-minute class offers meditation and gentle yoga stretches. The meditation segment of the class creates more calm, inner peace, and balance that benefits your emotional well-being and overall health. Yoga instructor Pam Harris Stewart leads the 12:10--12:55 pm class on Thursdays, and yoga instructor Colleen Gallant leads the 4:15--5:00 pm class on Tuesdays.

Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre hours during Convocation

The Sports Centre/Fitness Centre will be CLOSED during Convocation from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 16 - Friday, May 19. We are open from 6:00 to 8:00 am and 1:00 to 9:00 pm on those days.

STLHE Student Travel Bursary

Do you have a student co-presenting at the Society of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education conference in June 2023? There is one travel bursary available for up to $1000 for an undergraduate student who is co-presenting with a UPEI instructor. To apply, send a letter to the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC@upei.ca) by May 15, 2023. The letter of application should include the following:

  • accepted abstract
  • the name and program of the undergraduate student
  • a brief explanation of the student's role in the presentation 
  • a detailed budget.

Specialty fitness classes and small group training for the Spring semester

NEW small group training and specialty fitness classes begin in May. To view prices and offerings, please log into recreation.upei.ca. UPEI students, staff, and faculty: When logging in, DO NOT enter your email in the space that says community. Click on the green UPEI LOGIN button, and enter your UPEI email and password. Then click on the Fitness Programming icon and then on either small group training or specialty fitness classes. Follow the prompts for the programs you wish to register in.
