What Our Students Say
UPEI French students are working in amazing and exciting careers! Read more about their experiences.
"My professors at UPEI encouraged me to be bold and move outside my comfort zone by participating in language exchanges and an overseas work term. Without these immersion experiences and the core language skills that I gained in Modern Languages classes at UPEI, I would never have been able to attain the language levels required of a simultaneous interpreter."
- Deidre Kelly, interpreter on Parliament Hill
Master of Conference Interpreting at University of Ottawa
"I am extremely lucky to have studied French as a child and at university. Thanks to it, I work with the Office of the Veterans Ombudsman and now at the Veterans Review and Appeal Board serving our Veterans - it opened a whole new world for me! There is one piece of advice I can honestly give to any student and that is to continue to learn and further explore the French language and Francophone cultures. It guarantees fulfillment at all levels!"
- Corrado Micalef, Veterans Affairs Canada, PEI
"For me, being able to understand, speak and communicate in French is a really important skill. Since my arrival in Canada, I have realized the value that French carries in my life. Thanks to French, I was able to quickly find work. I was able to accomplish things that normally I wouldn't have been able to do without my knowledge of French. In the Canadian employment world, French is a skill that allows employees to earn a higher salary than others. Other than monetary gain, I find that French embellishes my daily life. I have the opportunity to discover new things, and I can easily travel to French-speaking countries. At UPEI the teachers are very encouraging, and the courses are exciting. The courses give us the possibility to meet many other people who have an interest in this very beautiful language. So, I encourage all students to take French courses."
- Mahima Tacouri, current student
"Studying French, one of the most spoken languages worldwide, opens the door to multiple career opportunities in various fields, whether in Canada or other French-speaking countries. Learning a new language can be seen as challenging; at UPEI however, the small class sizes and dedicated teachers can help immensely in that endeavour."
- Athéna Qurin, current student
"The program's strongest assets are the professors' passion for literature and eagerness to explore old and news ideas."
- Jean-Phylippe Provencher, PhD student, University of Ottawa
