The Department of Pathology and Microbiology will be interviewing 4 candidates for the tenure track faculty position in Veterinary Bacteriology.  

Our third candidate, Dr. Khawaja Ashfaque Ahmed, is a board-certified microbiologist by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in Immunology and planning to appear for the Bacteriology and Mycology in 2021.  

Teaching Seminar:  “Systemic Mycoses” 

Systemic mycosis, or systemic fungal disease, is characterized by the spread of a fungal organism to various organs of the body following entry into an animal and after initial localized infection of the lungs or the intestines.  This mini-lecture will discuss the habitat, morphology, life cycle, pathogenesis, clinical findings, specimen collection, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment options for some important veterinary fungi.

Research Seminar:  Host–Pathogen Interactions:  Applications of Metabolomics and Seahorse Technology in the Veterinary Setting

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most important public health threats, posing a serious challenge to humans, animals, and the environment. A holistic approach is required to deal with the AMR problem, including gaining greater insights into host-pathogen interactions, finding alternatives to antibiotics, and biomarkers discovery for the early detection of pathogenic infections to prevent heavy therapeutic antibiotics use. Metabolites are the intermediates and end-products of biological processes. The bacterial pathogens have their independent metabolism, and thus metabolomics can help identify bacteria-specific metabolites as diagnostic biomarkers and bacteria-induced metabolic perturbation to help understand the disease process. The cutting-edge metabolomics and Seahorse metabolic analyzer platforms are broadly applicable in several research areas, including infectious diseases, toxicology, neuroscience, and cancer. This research seminar will present metabolomics and Seahorse metabolic analyzer data that correlates with the protection of chickens against Escherichia coli septicemia and discuss the future applications.
