Disabling background data on your phone doesn't just save your data it saves your battery. For Android phones the feature is called "Data Saver". Go to Settings> Connections>Data Usage>Data Saver>toggle Off.

For iPhone the feature is called Background App Refresh. Go to Settings>tap on General>scroll down and tap on Background App Refresh>toggle Background App Refresh off.
