Online Research Computing Bootcamp using Python

Posting Date(s)

ACENET will be teaching an online research computing bootcamp. This workshop is normally done in-person over two days, but is being converted to an online format that will take place over four afternoons, as follows:

  • 27 April, 12:30-5:00pm Atlantic
  • 29 April, 1:00-5:00pm Atlantic
  •   4 May, 1:00-5:00pm Atlantic
  •   6 May, 1:00-5:00pm Atlantic

Using software-carpentry.org materials, the series will introduce you to the Unix Shell, Version Control with Git, and Python. It will be hands-on and cover the fundamentals of Python, including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using Python in everyday tasks.

The course is aimed at faculty, researchers, students and industry doing R&D. Previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop is not required. You do need to have a laptop/desktop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages. As this is an online workshop, it would also be useful to have a headset and extra monitor set up for a dual screen option.
