"I've met so many people that made adjusting to life in a new country easy."

What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?

I knew I wanted to study actuarial science, and my research found that UPEI is one of only 14 universities in Canada with an actuarial science program. I'm originally from Savanne, Mauritius and what made UPEI stand out for me was how calm and cozy it seemed. I also spoke with a few friends, and they told me how nice the place was, so I decided to go for it.

"The quality and transferability of this program is integral for a more sustainable future."

I've have had a long-standing interest in environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation, and an engineering degree felt like the natural starting point in being part of the greater solution to these global issues. UPEI had a relatively new full-degree program established while I was still in high school, which seemed to align with my personal values. I also have a very close relationship with my family. As I grew up on PEI, at the end of high school I did not feel quite ready to move too far from them.

UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers recruit PEI native Zach Biggar

For athletes, few feelings are more comforting than looking up in the stands and seeing loved ones cheering you on.

Zach Biggar will experience plenty of that, as the Portage, PEI native has decided to return home to play for the UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers.

Growing up, Biggar spent countless hours cheering on his hometown team and envisioning the day he would take to the ice as one of them. That dream is now a reality, and Biggar couldn’t be more excited to play in front of family and friends who have supported him throughout his hockey journey.

What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?

I've wanted to be a veterinarian since I was little and never considered another career path. I have always wanted to attend AVC, but now that I am married and have children, I need to stay local as we have a farm in Nova Scotia, and relocating wasn't a practical option. I stay in PEI during the week and drive home to Martock each weekend to be with my husband and our three children, and that wouldn't be possible anywhere else.
