The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) provides primary and specialty care clinical services for small and large animal patients, as well as providing a clinical teaching environment for veterinary students. 

Due to the continued expansion and growth of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we are seeking applications from motivated, enthusiastic and qualified individuals to fill one (1) full-time position in the role of Assistant Manager - Technical Services, to join the VTH Administration team. 

Working in the VTH Administration team under the oversight of the Hospital Director, and reporting to the Operations Manager, this Assistant Manager - Technical Services position will work collaboratively with the existing Assistant Manager – Technical Services and will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of the management and supervision of the VTH’s day-to-day activities, with a particular focus on supporting the technical and support staff providing inpatient and outpatient care within the hospital.

As such, these positions will represent a solution-oriented veterinary technical staff perspective, working collaboratively to bridge between the senior VTH Administration team and hospital staff to facilitate problem-solving and process improvements across the hospital.  Contributing to the VTH Administration team’s ability to respond proactively and efficiently to the hospital’s operational and staffing needs, each Assistant Manager - Technical Services - will share the responsibility for managing and administering the HR processes required for hospital operations, leading and assisting with supporting and promoting efficient workflows and opportunities for staff engagement, development and quality improvement. 

An important part of this role will include engaging with staff to foster a more supportive and professionally rewarding environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acting independently with supervision and support from the Operations Manager, responsibilities include:

  • To work directly with hospital staff and the VTH Administration team in the management of human resource processes and tasks, primarily as they relate to technical and support roles providing patient care
  • Identify, promote and manage opportunities to enhance patient and client care, hospital workflows, quality improvement and the work environment, through collaborative relationships with hospital staff and colleagues
  • Manage, supervise and provide leadership for technical and support positions across the VTH
  • Lead on solution-oriented problem solving, acting as a primary point of contact in VTH Administration, in support of the management of the hospital’s day-to-day operational needs
  • To organize and facilitate onboarding processes for new VTH staff, including orientation, coaching and assisting with developing and providing a mentorship program
  • To assist the VTH Administration team in the scoping, development, communication and implementation of hospital projects, change initiatives and objectives
  • To assist in supporting the use of hospital systems, including training, troubleshooting and representing the technical and support staff perspective towards potential process improvements
  • To assist with external engagement as part of recruitment activities and to develop and implement opportunities for continuing education for VTH staff
  • To work collaboratively with the Assistant Manager - Technical Services, supporting each other
  • To participate in an on-call schedule to support the management of VTH operations outside of office hours

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Related areas of study may include Healthcare Administration, Human Resource Management and Business Administration
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in a related field, with three years’ experience in a supervisory/management capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a veterinary, healthcare or closely related field would be preferred
  • Animal Health Technician (AHT) / Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) designation, and/or demonstrated experience/understanding of technical roles in a veterinary or animal care environment, would be considered a strong asset
  • Strong demonstrated skills and experience in human resources, planning, organizing, scheduling, and managing employees
  • Strong human relations abilities, excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Ability to lead and mentor staff as a supervisor, and to bring teams together to a common goal
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate and implement change management and process improvements
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and work under stressful situations
  • Experience working in a unionized environment would be an asset
  • Considerable knowledge of computer-related systems
