The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications from qualified individuals to fill a part-time contract position as a research technician in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology to support research in fish health and comparative immunology. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Providing general laboratory management
  • The successful applicant will provide specialized technical research support for the Hoplite Research Group
  • Coordinating and assisting with major technical aspects of research projects for the Hoplite laboratory
  • Provide support and contribute to the research programs for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and residents
  • Management of supplies used in the research laboratory
  • Request quotes, generate requisitions and participate in account tracking for purchases
  • Responsible for biosafety certification of the CL2 research laboratory
  • Responsible for biohazard and chemical inventory of the research laboratory
  • Have a good working knowledge of molecular techniques like RNA/DNA extraction, qPCR, sequencing, cloning
  • Have a good working knowledge of fish handling, care and procedures: vaccination, anesthesia, serum/plasma/mucus collection, tagging, necropsy, aseptic sample collection
  • Other duties as developed and assigned

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A BSc (or equivalent) and a minimum of two years of experience in a relevant discipline. A graduate degree in a relevant discipline (i.e. immunology, molecular biology) or a Medical Laboratory Technologist diploma may be advantageous
  • Verbal and written ability to communicate professionally and competently
  • High interpersonal skills
  • Must have the ability to learn and adapt to new techniques and be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work as part of a team with multiple students, PDFs, etc.
