Diagnostic Services (DS) at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for a full-time Laboratory Manager to work under the direction of the Director of Diagnostic Services. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Laboratory Manager is a team member of Diagnostic Services reporting to the Director of Diagnostic Services. The primary responsibilities associated with this role will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Direct supervision of staff: The Laboratory Manager will staff, including involvement in the selection process; schedule; approve overtime, and performance manage staff within Diagnostic Services
  • Client Management: The Laboratory Manager will respond to complex client requests, complex client inquiries, client complaints, client issues, and research service requests
  • Technical Leadership: The Laboratory Manager will assist investigating technical issues with equipment, methods and samples. The Laboratory Manager will investigate new methods and instrumentation required for Diagnostic Services to meet its mandate. The Laboratory Manager will be involved with equipment and method validation. The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for developing Standard Operating Procedures for equipment, methods and protocols. The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the training of staff on equipment, methods and protocols
  • Costing, budgeting and purchasing: The Lab Manager will assist with providing quotations for research projects and special projects. The Lab Manager will assist with the updating and maintenance of Diagnostic Services’ fee schedule
  • ISO 17025 Accreditation: The Lab Manager will help lead the ISO accreditation of methods within Diagnostic Services with the development of ISO 17025 required Standard Operating Procedures, maintaining training records, record management, and incident reporting
  • ISO 17043 Accreditation: The Lab Manager will assist with processes to support the accreditation of the Veterinary Laboratory Association Proficiency Program
  • Biosafety Certification: The Lab Manager will assist with Containment Level 2 certification of laboratories within Diagnostic Services

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Must have completed a MLT diploma or Degree Program with successful completion of national CSLMS Certification; MSc with equivalent veterinary diagnostic laboratory experience would be considered
  • Minimum of 5 years’experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory
  • ISO/IEC 17025 course is required
  • Management training is required
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team member is required.
  • Effective interpersonal relationship skills with demonstrated ability to lead & motivate is required
  • Excellent working knowledge of a variety of software applications such as MS word, Excel, Quality Management System Software is needed
  • Excellent planning and organization skills, thoroughness and attention to detail are needed
