The Department of History and Classics at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a Sessional Instructor for the 2025 Fall Semester. We are seeking an instructor to teach the following course in the Department of History and Classics. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Please note: the course offered below will be taught in person, unless otherwise specified as an online course. 

HIST 2090-1 – Special Topics: A History of Africa from 1500

This course surveys the rich and complicated history of Africa from the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade to the end of colonialism in the late twentieth century. It examines the key political, social, economic and cultural transformations across the continent during this period. Themes include the expansion of trade networks, the rise and fall of powerful kingdoms, the influence of Islam, the effects of European contact, the slave trade, colonialism and resistance, and nationalism and the rise of independence movements. Emphasis will be on African agency in shaping historical outcomes.

In-person course: Monday from 17:30 to 20:15. during the Fall Semester 2025.

Qualifications:
 

Successful applicants will have a graduate degree or a doctoral degree specializing in any aspect of African history. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI sessional roster for History and Classics and full-time and term contract Faculty Members of the Academic unit.
