The University of Prince Edward Island is located on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of Epekwitk.  The Department of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Human Rights, reporting to the Vice President People and Culture, is seeking candidates for a Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Human Rights to provide leadership to a growing team of staff working across: equity, diversity, and inclusion; the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office; and administration of harassment and discrimination complaints.

Reporting to the Vice President People and Culture the successful candidate is responsible for advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the University community. The Director will manage staff working across sexual violence; equity, diversity, and inclusion; and administration of harassment and discrimination complaints. The Director will provide expert advice and guidance to the University’s senior leadership regarding these matters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties will include:

  • Advising senior administration on advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within and across the entire University, including building these principles into processes of the University
  • Monitoring trends related to human rights and sexual violence incidents, best practice, and legislation and make recommendations to improve university policy and minimize legal risk
  • Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with individuals across the organization who are instrumental in ensuring that equity is placed at the heart of the University
  • Providing leadership and oversight of the: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Unit, Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, and those responsible for implementation of harassment and discrimination complaint processes
  • Providing leadership to the implementation of the University of Prince Edward Island Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy
  • Providing advice to staff to ensure all complaint processes through the office follow principles of administrative and human rights law applicable to harassment, discrimination, and sexual violence
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree or equivalent, in a related discipline (such as Human Rights, Critical Race Studies, Law, Sociology, Equity Studies, Disabilities Studies, Diversity Studies)
  • 7 -10 years of related work experience
  • Deep understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, sexual violence, harassment and discrimination
  • Demonstrated record of success in building and sustaining programs that have advanced these goals in an incremental fashion, in a complex institutional setting (post-secondary would be an asset)
  • Lived experience or expertise in diversity and inclusion 
  • Knowledge of, and experience with the application of, principles of administrative and human rights law applicable to harassment, discrimination, and sexual violence complaint processes, including: evidentiary standards, procedural fairness, and administration of investigative processes
  • Demonstrated experience working across large organizational structures to influence positive change
  • Knowledge and expertise in translating EDI theory to practice is essential
  • Experience translating senior-level vision into action
  • Demonstrated personal interest and commitment to improvement in the status of peoples, including those covered by human rights legislation
  • Expertise in policy development or similar, an asset
  • Experience in complex or post-secondary institutions would be an asset
  • Experience leading or facilitating significant organizational change would be an asset
  • Ability to respond to sensitive and complex situations with sound judgement discretion and care
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office products
