Reporting directly to the Director of Academic Affairs and matrixed to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME). The successful applicant will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the UGME Office and providing strategic support to key initiatives for UGME activities, including the delivery of the Medical Doctor (M.D.) program.  This position is also responsible for leadership over the curriculum and accreditation portfolio. The successful applicant will build and foster relationships with Memorial University (MUN) Faculty of Medicine UGME administration and faculty leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Manager’s duties include the following:

  • Managing the operations of the UGME office, including financial, administrative and human resources
  • Direct supervision of the team in the UGME department
  • Providing leadership and strategic support to UGME with minimal supervision
  • Oversight for scheduling of MD program activities across all four phases of the curriculum
  • Facilitating faculty recruitment, scheduling, coordination and administration of UGME activities
  • A voting member on the Undergraduate Medical Studies (UGMS) curriculum committee, which reports to the Faculty Council
  • An active and contributing member of all four phase management teams
  • Actively involved in all decision-making which affects the policies, procedures, management, and delivery of the MD program
  • Responsible for the management of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) office, the UGME personnel and the delivery of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program
  • Responsible for recruitment, training and supervision of unionized, non-bargaining and management professional staff involved in coordinating and delivering the MD program
  • Supervising individuals responsible for clinical and pre-clinical scheduling, assessment delivery and administration, progress monitoring, curriculum review and maintenance, as well as the accreditation of the MD Program by the Committee on the Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS)
  • Providing strategic advice and support to the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine on matters relating to the MD program
  • Spearheading key initiatives of the Faculty of Medicine and Undergraduate Medical Education to advance the mission of the medical school
  • Responsible for upholding the standards the affiliated regulatory authorities and relevant stakeholder groups mandated
  • Liaising with the Distributed Medical Education Manager to improve processes related to the coordination of rural clinical experiences for learners in the MD program
  • Overseeing and monitoring the application of related policies and procedures
  • Ongoing collaboration with MUN UGME administration and faculty to ensure the alignment of University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and Memorial University policies with national and international standards and to enhance the MD program and resources to support its delivery
  • Ongoing collaboration with stakeholders at the local, provincial, national and international levels to ensure the alignment of University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) policies with national and international standards and to enhance the MD program and resources to support its delivery
  • Ongoing research and compilation of data to inform various stakeholder groups within the Faculty of Medicine and across Canada
  • Representing the Faculty of Medicine and Undergraduate Medical Education at UPEI through the preparation and delivery of presentations at local, provincial and national levels
  • Developing solutions to issues arising in the dynamic educational environment
  • Performing other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a Graduate Degree in business, health administration or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of a bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of work experience in progressive leadership positions in an academic environment or health-related field
  • Experience in Academic Administration of a centralized program would be an asset
  • Delivery of the UGME curriculum requires a high degree of coordination with academic support units in the Faculty of Medicine, including Health Sciences Information and Media Service (HSIMS), Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC) and Distributed Medical Education (DME). As a result, the incumbent must demonstrate successful negotiation and conflict management skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills are required
  • To excel in the position, it would be essential to possess excellent analytical and organizational skills, effective leadership and strategic thinking abilities, and a solid attention to detail
  • The successful candidate will be thorough, collegial, pay attention to detail, and demonstrate commitment
  • Experience within a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset
