Reporting directly to the Director of the Clinical Learning Simulation Centre (CLSC) within the Faculty of Medicine. The purpose and primary role of this position is to manage the operation of the specialized clinical simulation solution utilized in the CLSC, as well as other technical hardware and software utilized to assist with improving educational outcomes and performances for both standardized and manikin-based training.  This role is broad in scope and includes elements of management, technical process analysis, programming, and managing confidential video recordings of healthcare students, hands-on system administration and solutions development.  This work will include daily monitoring and maintenance, and configuration of the software system, responding to new and changing needs within the CLSC through the reconfiguration of existing assets as well as recommending and assisting in the procurement of appropriate acquisitions of new technology, and consulting with others both inside and outside the department regarding the operation and use of these systems.

This position interacts with all stakeholder groups utilizing the highly utilized CLSC. There will be a variety of technical support and consulting issues. There are also some programming/scripting tasks.

This position serves as an internal resource to all groups within the CLSC. This role will be crucial in the programming needs for OSCE’s which is the summative exam for medical learners. It also provides support in managing schedules, performance reviews of technical staff, managing AV equipment, and is also to be involved in the procurement process of AV equipment. They will be technical support for students, faculty and staff via telephone, email and walk-in visits utilizing the CLSC.  This position may require some off-hours work due to the nature of the systems that this role is responsible for.

Additionally, this position regularly contacts potential vendors, suppliers, and other institutions outside the university on a variety of design, support, security, and procurement issues regarding audio-visual equipment for standardized patients and manikin-based training.

The physical work environment is an assigned office within the CLSC within the Faculty of Medicine.

This position works closely and collaboratively with Memorials’ personnel within their Clinical Learning Simulation Centre with troubleshooting issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Managing the storage of confidential video recordings of healthcare learners

  • Authorize for AV purchases under $2000

  • Manage AV equipment within the CLSC.  Involved with the procurement process of AV equipment. Contacting vendors to secure quotes, writing proposals for tenders

  • Perform performance reviews for technical staff utilizing the simulation software

  • Assist in the planning, design and implementation of the specialized clinical software solution within the CLSC

  • Working closely with the IT department to ensure network security, data integrity, and compliance with institutional policies and best practices

  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, suggest and implement solutions collaboratively with ITSS

  • Setting up specialized AV equipment related to simulation devices, for ex. manikins, wireless speakers and microphones used when conducting simulation activities

  • Leading the operationalization of the software solution during simulation sessions for healthcare learners and providers that require monitoring for clinical proficiency

  • Leading the operationalization of the software solution during summative exams for medical learners

  • Installing and configuring clinical software solutions, simulation software, and related applications on simulation workstations

  • Ensure compatibility and interoperability of IT systems within the CLSC ,for example interaction with manikin and simulation management solutions

  • Review and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems and develop strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems

  • Leading the deployment of new applications and enhancements to existing applications

  • Conduct research on hardware and software products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts

  • Leading the calibration of cameras, audio systems and other AV equipment to ensure optimal performance

  • Leading the setup of simulation scenarios utilized in the clinical software solution to ensure correct operation of the AV components

  • Leading the setup of the paging system required for summative exams of medical learners

  • Continuously monitoring the performance of AV systems and clinical software during simulations to identify and address any issues

  • Generating reports on system performance, usage statistics, and any incidents that occurred during simulations

  • Diagnosing and resolving hardware and software issues promptly to minimize downtime install/Implement and configure clinical software systems

  • Monitor clinical software system performance and adjust software configuration as necessary to ensure optimal performance and functionality

  • Diagnose and correct problems identified by monitoring systems, clients, or co-workers

  • Establish or revise standard procedures for system operation and maintenance, and ensure they are followed by other departmental staff

  • Develop and maintain documentation describing the purpose, function, configuration, and maintenance of systems

  • Ensure systems are backed up and restore processes are tested regularly

  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, suggest and implement solutions collaboratively with ITSS

  • Customizing software interfaces and AV setups to meet the specific needs of different simulation scenarios or training programs

  • Analysis and creation of operational reports on utilization

  • Downloading reports from software solutions and disseminating them to faculty

  • Some after-hours work may be required. Summative exams for medical learners may be scheduled on off-hours. Equipment replacement, troubleshooting, etc. 

  • May need to be done on off-hours/weekends as required

  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required

  • A 4- year Undergrad degree would be an asset

  • Incumbent must have a high degree of maturity and work experience to draw on and interpret policies, be aware of potential situations arising, be able to suggest solutions to issues, and effectively handle the complex and demanding nature of the position

  • Incumbent requires exceptional financial, organizational, management, communication, and time management skills

  • Incumbent requires exceptional problem-solving and critical thinking, including above-average writing and analytical skills

  • Experience within a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset
