The Department of Pathology and Microbiology is seeking applications from qualified individuals to fill a full-time position to provide technical support for the VPM 2010 (Bacteriology & Mycology) course - a 4-credit course for 2nd year DVM students. The role also involves coordination and assistance with all major technical aspects of research projects in classical and molecular microbiology. The successful applicant will have a multi-disciplinary background demonstrating an ability to learn new techniques efficiently and apply them in teaching and research.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching responsibilities include providing technical support for the laboratory portion of VPM2010 Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology course, including setting up the associated containment level 2 (CL2) laboratory space
  • Tracking and ordering of laboratory teaching supplies, preparation of Risk Group (RG)-2 bacterial and fungal cultures, biochemical tests and/or stained bacteriological and fungal materials
  • Direct interaction with students during weekly laboratories, examination proctoring and marking
  • Being familiar with a variety of laboratory techniques, including Risk Group-2 bacterial and fungal culture and characterization, biochemical tests as well as molecular biology techniques (i.e., cell culture, nucleic acid purification, gel electrophoresis, conventional and real time quantitative PCR, molecular cloning, DNA sequence library preparation and sequencing, bioinformatics, protein expression and analysis)
  • General research activities will include management and technical support for the bacteriology and molecular biology research laboratory
  • Requesting quotes, generating requisitions and participating in account tracking for purchases
  • Providing support and contributing to the research programs of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, collaborating faculty and/or visiting scientists
  • Be familiar with Containment Level-2 criteria and will be responsible for applications and certification for 3 laboratory spaces
  • Ensuring all safety documents are up to date in all laboratories (chemicals MSDS, microorganisms MSDS, UPEI Biosafety permit, CFIA and Public Health permits) and writing Standard Operating Procedure as necessary
  • In addition, the successful applicant will take a lead role in the maintenance of approximately 70 student microscopes and interact with the UPEI Biosafety Officer and Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs to ensure Containment Levels in teaching support and teaching laboratories maintained and/or modified as needed
  • Other duties as developed and assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • The successful candidate will have a BSc degree (a graduate degree is preferred) with a strong background in bacteriology and molecular biology
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a research laboratory
  • Teaching experience in a laboratory setting
  • Candidates must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem solving and time management skills
  • Experience with computers and programs such as: Word, Excel, and Moodle, Online UPEI Biosafety and chemical inventories
