Reporting to the Human Rights Counsel, the Human Rights and Equity Advisor will act as the primary contact for all University of Prince Edward Island community members involved in processes of reporting or disclosing harassment and discrimination under a new harassment and discrimination policy. The Human Rights and Equity Advisor will have responsibility for coordination of processes under the new policy.  They will also help in shaping and implementing those processes as UPEI launches its updated policy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receive disclosures of harassment, discrimination or other equity concerns and assist individuals in understanding their rights and options available to them
  • Provide guidance and information on the university’s policies, procedures and available resources related to harassment, discrimination and equity 
  • Conduct preliminary assessments of disclosures to determine the course of action in accordance with the university policies
  • Assist individuals in making formal complaints if they choose to do so and manage the complaint process
  • Collaborate as necessary with external investigators to ensure proper administration of formal complaint process 
  • Assists with putting accommodations or immediate measures in place on a case-by-case basis
  • Ensures Complainant and Respondent are kept informed of the status of ongoing procedures
  • Deals with highly confidential materials and must exercise sound judgment, tact, unquestionable degree of integrity and diplomacy using well-developed interpersonal communication skills to handle at times emotional concerns 
  • Ensure the accurate and confidential documentation of all disclosures and actions taken and handle all sensitive information in compliance with privacy laws and university policies
  • Monitor and analyze trends related to harassment and discrimination on campus
  • Provides recommendations to inform policy changes and initiatives aimed at improving the campus environment
  • Engages in documentation of statistical information, regarding the incidence of harassment and discrimination on campus, and on institutional initiatives related to harassment and discrimination, as required for institutional reporting
  • Maintains an understanding of the legal and reporting requirements and advises on policy compliance
  • Providing guidance to the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Education & Training Officer on training and education initiatives
  • Working closely with the Human Rights Early Resolution Specialist to ensure smooth administration of harassment and discrimination disclosures
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary university degree, in an academic discipline that is transferable to the role (i.e human rights, equity studies, law) or other university degree combined with relevant lived experience
  • Masters degree in a related field is an asset
  • Two years’ relevant work experience
  • Experience in a position responsible for complaint processes related to human rights, harassment, discrimination, workplace misconduct, grievances, or similar is a strong asset 
  • Deep understanding of concepts of human rights, discrimination, harassment, including PEI Human Rights Act
  • Understanding of racism, ableism, systemic discrimination, intersectionality, microaggressions, and trauma 
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with campus community members
  • Ability to remain neutral and unbiased 
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and manage emotional responses in challenging circumstances
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in a professional setting
  • Superior communication skills (verbal, non-verbal, written, and listening)
  • Experience or relationships with relevant community organizations, government agencies, or similar, would be an asset
  • Experience maintaining records and data reporting
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Microsoft Word and Excel
