The Department of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Human Rights promotes principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion at UPEI. We are responsible for supporting the strategic direction towards advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the University community by monitoring the progress of the UPEI Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy, and providing leadership to the University to ensure equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights obligations and goals are being met. The Office also ensures that training and resources are available to faculty, staff, and students at UPEI.

Reporting to the Director of the Department of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Human Rights, the Sexual & Gender Diversity Specialist (SGDS) will play a critical role in supporting the department’s mandate by developing and delivering initiatives that enhance the university experience for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, advocating for their needs, and ensuring that campus policies and systems are inclusive and equitable. This role aims to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of the university community, inclusive of their sexual/romantic orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • An intersectional approach to developing and implementing initiatives on campus that support and promote the well-being of 2SLGBTQ+ community members 
  • Providing advice and input to various departments regarding strategic planning initiatives and policy development as they related to Sexual & Gender Diversity
  • Review and recommend revisions to university policies and procedures to ensure they are inclusive and equitable for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Conduct needs assessments to identify systemic barriers faced by 2SLGBTQ+ community members and propose solutions.
  • Collaborate with other members of the department in the development of educational tools and resources to promote and increase awareness and understanding of the lived experiences of 2SLGBTQ individuals 
  • Advocate for the needs and concerns of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals within the university.
  • Research best practices around Sexual & Gender Diversity projects and initiatives, and utilize this information in the planning, development, and facilitation of all projects and initiatives (e.g., training seminars, information sessions)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary university degree, in an academic discipline that is transferable to the role
  • A Master’s degree is an asset 
  • Minimum of three years related experience
  • Experience must include a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of trauma-informed practices as well as the impacts of systemic and structural inequities on historically marginalized groups such as racialized people
  • Knowledge, involvement, and familiarity with the historical and current barriers faced by 2SLGBTQ+ communities due to homophobia and transphobia, issues of equity, and systemic change.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary or other complex institutions would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in a professional setting
  • Managing complex assignments from inception through to implementation
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, staff and faculty
  • Superior communication skills (verbal, non-verbal, written, and listening) 
  • Experience or relationships with relevant community organizations, or similar, would be an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Microsoft Word and strong command of PowerPoint 
  • Experience with MyUPEI, Moodle, or Sharepoint would be an asset 
  • Lived experience as an asset
