Bookstore Manager - Ancillary Services

We are seeking a dynamic Campus Bookstore Manager to help us achieve our mission of delivering an exceptional experience for our students and campus community. The Bookstore continues to remain diligent and adaptable in order to achieve financial growth. To be adaptable, the operation must continue to focus on the future of how post-secondary education is going to be delivered, understanding the target market’s purchasing trends, and engage with the customers to support their success.
Reporting to the Director of Ancillary Services, the Campus Bookstore Manager is responsible for the continued development, operation, and management of the UPEI Bookstore. This includes overseeing the daily operations, staff supervision, strategic planning, financial management, marketing, and the provision of academic content. The Manager will establish procedures, manage technology applications, and drive revenue growth through creative initiatives and new business development.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Working with the administrative staff, the Bookstore Manager will oversee core bookstore functions, including staff training, inventory management, student accounts, sales reporting, supplier contracts, safety procedures, and communication protocols
- Daily Operations Management: Supervise and manage the daily operations of the Campus Bookstore, ensuring efficient workflow and customer satisfaction
- Human Resources Management: Oversee the hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management of 3 direct reports and 7-10 student staff.Ensure compliance with HR policies and maintain confidential records
- Financial Resource Management: Manage an operating budget in excess of $2M. Oversee revenue targets, expenditure control, and resource allocation to meet departmental needs
- Administer Bookstore Systems and Technology: Manage key departmental systems and software, including Bookware and Colleague. Generate reports, assist with contract negotiations, system upgrades, and coordinate with other university departments
- Strategic Direction and Revenue Growth: Develop and implement creative revenue-generating initiatives and new business opportunities. Seek strategic partnerships to create new revenue streams and integrate department strategy into daily operations
- Marketing and Communication: Oversee the Campus Bookstore website and online store. Ensure compliance with UPEI Marketing & Communications for proper messaging
- Safety and Compliance: Develop and maintain safety protocols, including evacuation plans and incident reporting. Ensure a safe environment for students and staff
- Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director of Ancillary Services to advance departmental objectives
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Educational Background: Post-secondary credential, preferably in Business, with substantial managerial experience
- Leadership and Management: Minimum 5 years of experience in a managerial capacity, demonstrating strong leadership and supervisory skills
- Visionary and Goal-Oriented: Proven ability to set and achieve unit goals and objectives with initiative and foresight
- Professionalism and Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels
- Financial Management: Strong financial management skills, with attention to detail and a focus on customer service
- Retail and Bookstore Operations: Experience in retail and/or bookstore operations, particularly in a university/college setting, is an asset
Equivalencies: Other equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
