Student Research Assistant - School of Climate Change and Adaptation - Faculty of Science
$17.05 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay
ASAP to August 31, 2025
The School of Climate Change and Adaptation is seeking applications for up to three (3) temporary student research assistant positions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in lab and field environments under the direction of Dr. Aitazaz Farooque, Professor & Associate Dean to collect geo-referenced soil, water, and environmental samples.
- Assist with water and soil quality sampling, system hardware design, instrumentation, use of geo-positional devices, and analysis of data using geographical information system (GIS) tools.
- Help system design, integration of sensors, hardware integration, and field/crop mapping using the differential global positioning system (DGPS) and GIS.
- The incumbents are required to assist with data preparation for machinery and agricultural systems.
- Assist with development reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
- Assist with prediction and forecasting using climatic variables using computer-based and physical modeling.
- The students will be trained in soil and water technologies for agriculture production systems. The students will be encouraged to participate in industry field days and meetings to present research results.
- The students will be trained in traditional statistical techniques for analyzing relevant data
- The students will be trained in advanced machine learning techniques for analyzing relevant data
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a UPEI student
- Must have good professional and technical skills
- Must have a good academic record and a strong work ethic
- Ability to work in a team and independently
- Willingness to work in lab and field environments
- Willingness to travel within Atlantic Provinces to collect research data
- Must have a background in statistics, hardware engineering, system dynamics, and machine learning
- Familiarity with data preprocessing and data analysis techniques and biological principles
- Familiarity with report and manuscript writing
- A valid driver’s license is considered an asset
