The organizers of the Institute of Island Studies' 2024 Harry Baglole Memorial Public Symposium in Island Studies invite the UPEI campus community and members of the public to stop by the Schurman Market Square between 4 pm and 6 pm on November 7, 2024, to learn more about a few not-for-profit organizations doing work related to the themes of homelessness and food insecurity that we are talking about later that evening in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium. We are delighted to be able to provide this opportunity for everyone on campus that day to interact one-on-one with some of the hard-working people from Meals on Wheels PEI, the John Howard Society of PEI, the Community Outreach Centre (with the Adventure Group), the PEI Food Exchange, PEI Family Violence Prevention Services, and ResourceAbilities on November 7. We hope that you will help us support their efforts by learning from your own conversations with them, and by sharing that knowledge.

Meals on Wheels PEI: Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious, delicious and affordable meals to a variety of groups, including: seniors, people with disabilities, individuals suffering from illnesses and those recovering from surgeries. Meals on Wheels are delivered by volunteers in 18 communities across Prince Edward Island, and we are always looking for new volunteers. Learn more at mealsonwheelspei.ca

John Howard Society of PEI: The John Howard Society of PEI is a nonprofit organization that assists Islanders in need. As an affiliate of JHS Canada, we offer a variety of programs specialized in housing, criminal justice, Veterans, prevention and diversion, and taxation. We are a growing organization that cares deeply about the well-being of the individuals in our community. We are also seeking volunteers for various roles and responsibilities.

Community Outreach Centre: The Community Outreach Centre in Charlottetown offers basic needs and wrap-around supports to anyone who is experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Services offered include but are not limited to case management, programming, education, mental health supports, medical support, basic needs supports, and streamlined access to available resources in the community. The Community Outreach Centre is open every day of the week, 365 days a year, and is open from 8 am– 8 pm. It is fully operated by multi-disciplinary staff and also has a complement of volunteer opportunities.

PEI Food Exchange: The PEI Food Exchange is a volunteer non-profit addressing issues of food insecurity on PEI since 2013. Our initiatives include food skills, preserving and edible gardening workshops, building community capacity, and gleaning. We meet once a month to make 100 healthy meals (using ingredients sourced from local farmers) that are delivered to people in need. Learn more at www.foodexchangepei.com. Join our facebook group at Food Exchange PEI to keep up with our activities and get in touch when something piques your interest. We are building community through the power of food.

PEI Family Violence Prevention Services: Family Violence Prevention Services Inc. is a community volunteer organization based on the principles of justice, equality, and peace. We are dedicated to the eradication of physical, sexual, and emotional violence in families through advocacy, prevention programs, and the provision of quality services designed to empower and support those affected by family violence.

ResourceAbilities: ResourceAbilities is dedicated to promoting the full participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Island society. The non-profit organization was formed in 1974 with an original mandate to speak out on issues such as housing, education, employment, transportation, human rights, and access to support services, all of which it continues to address today. ResourceAbilities’ mission is inclusion, equity, and opportunities for all Islanders.
