ACENET Basics: Introduction to Shell Scripting

Event Date:
Thursday, May 19, 2022, 10:00 am
Room:
Virtual
Price:
Free!

Participants will learn how to use shell scripting to exercise the power of the command line. Shell scripting helps you save time, automate file management tasks, and better use Linux. This session teaches you how to name, locate, and set permissions for executable files, taking input and producing output. Learn about job scripts, shell variables, and looping commands. This workshop is designed for either new HPC users who are familiar with working in a Linux environment but have not had experience with shell scripting, or for experienced users seeking to get more out of shell scripting. In order to get the most from the session, participants are strongly encouraged to have a Digital Research Alliance of Canada/ACENET account and to bring a laptop to do the exercises.

This session will be delivered online.

To get the most from ACENET basics, please register for a Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) account. To register, contact your supervising professor, ask for their CCRI, and then visit https://ccdb.computecanada.ca/account_application. If your professor is not registered with the Alliance, please have them register and then follow up with you. In addition to an Alliance account, you will want a computer with Windows, MacOS X, or a Unix-based operating system (not a ChromeBook), and a stable internet connection. A registered account is not mandatory, but it is recommended to get the most out of our lessons. You can attend the first session to see how ACENET can assist in accelerating your computational research before you decide to obtain an account, if you wish.

This core session is designed to help new users at ACENET and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada get up and running. Participants must register using their institutional/organizational email address (not a personal email, i.e., gmail) at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/acenet-basics-introduction-to-shell-scripting-tickets-317567682487.

Connections details for the session as well as further preparation information will be sent out prior to the session.
