"Living and studying on PEI has created great practicum opportunities!"
What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?
I'm from Fort St. James, a small northern community in British Columbia and I chose UPEI’s Bachelor of Education (BEd) program because the application process considered my previous experience in instructional settings, experience with children and youth, academic achievements, and other extended training.
What do you find unique and interesting about the Bachelor of Education program?
Besides being a 60-credit hour program offered within one year, students in the BEd program are provided opportunities to specialize within international, Indigenous, early learning, and adult education study foci. Identifying as Indigenous, I chose to specialize in Indigenous education and complete my final practicum within an Indigenous community.
What kinds of support have you received during your time here from UPEI students, staff, and faculty members?
With the support of the UPEI faculty, I have the choice to complete my final practicum outside of PEI or even outside of Canada! Every staff and faculty member goes above and beyond to offer flexibility and adaptability, and having such a welcoming cohort of fellow students made moving to a new province and starting at a new university with a full course load feel achievable and fun!
"UPEI is a great place to start your post-secondary journey, with a friendly staff ready to support you throughout your first class and all the way to graduation!"
What kinds of opportunities have you experienced because you're studying at UPEI, or because of the Island location?
Living and studying on PEI has created great practicum opportunities to work within a single school district that serves an entire province. PEI offers a full Maritime experience with friendly locals, gorgeous landscapes, and all the seafood you can eat!
What's unique about UPEI, and Prince Edward Island, in your experience?
The opportunities found within a smaller institution like UPEI allow students more opportunities to play varsity sports, volunteer, or get involved with local clubs and events. The campus has a gym, running track, and a pool which all serve as great ways to unwind from studying!
What would you tell a high school student considering the Bachelor of Education program?
Focus on the process, not the product. It is okay if you don't know what you want to take, or what program you want to get into. UPEI is a great place to start your post-secondary journey, with a friendly staff ready to support you throughout your first class and all the way to graduation!
What are your general plans after graduation?
After graduating in May 2023, I plan to return to my position as an Indigenous school social worker back home. Because I have my Master of Education degree from another institution, I hope to apply my Bachelor of Education degree to pursue an educational leadership position in the near future.
