The State of Post-Secondary Education in Canada and Embedding a Culture of Hope at UPEI

On Monday, February 10, UPEI will welcome celebrated professor and author of "Hope Circuits: Rewiring Universities and other Systems for Human Flourishing", Dr. Jessica Riddell, back to campus. Through a campus-wide discussion, Dr. Riddell will share her insights on the state of post-secondary in Canada—and beyond—and how university communities can navigate to more sustainable and hopeful institutions.

Faculty, students, and staff are invited to Dr. Riddell’s presentation and interactive discussion from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Centre. There is no cost to attend.

"UPEI is excited to welcome thought leader and scholar, Dr. Jessica Riddell, back to our campus," says Dr. Wendy Rodgers, President and Vice-Chancellor, UPEI. "Dr. Riddell’s message of hope and transformation are extremely relevant and timely here at UPEI and universities around the world."

Dr. Riddell will share her thoughts on the state of post-secondary education in Canada and ways to move into new spaces of renewal and success. Following her presentation, she will lead an interactive discussion on strategies for embedding a culture of hope and belonging within UPEI.

Dr. Jessica Riddell is the founder of Hope Circuits Institute, a think tank dedicated to systems re-wiring and renewal in the post-secondary sector. In addition to "Hope Circuits: Rewiring Universities and other Systems for Human Flourishing", Dr. Riddell is the co-author of "Shakespeare’s Guide to Hope, Life and Learning" on which she collaborated with UPEI professor Dr. Shannon Murray and Dr. Lisa Dickson of the University of Northern British Columbia. Dr. Riddell holds the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence at Bishop’s University, is a 3M National Teaching Fellow, and has been recognized with numerous teaching awards.

In addition to being a leading intellectual at the intersection between the humanities and higher education, she is one of Canada’s most prolific public scholars on the role universities play in a civil, just society and regularly convenes conversations about how education shapes creative democracy.

In September 2024, Jessica Riddell delivered the keynote address for the Shannon K. Murray Lecture on Hope in the Academy at UPEI.
